À propos de cet audio
Former Navy SEAL Nick Foley reluctantly agrees to help investigate when American CIA operative Peter Yu goes missing in China. But when Yu's mutilated body washes up on a beach near Hong Kong along with dozens of other victims, the case takes a macabre turn. Suddenly Nick finds himself embroiled in another bioterrorism investigation being conducted by China's elite Snow Leopard counterterrorism unit and the Chinese CDC, this time involving illegally harvested organs for an unknown and nefarious end.
But Nick's investigation does not go unnoticed, and soon he finds a target on his back. After thwarting an attempt on his life, he is forced to go off the grid and enlist the help of beautiful CDC microbiologist Dr. Dazhong "Dash" Chen to help unmask his would-be killer. On the run and looking for answers, their budding romance is tested at every turn.
With each step closer they take to unmasking the truth, Nick and Dash find themselves drawn deeper into a global conspiracy that began over 2,000 years ago with the first emperor of China and now threatens to upset the world order as they know it in Hong Kong Black, the heart-pounding sequel to Alex Ryan's Beijing Red.

An Entertaining, Intelligent Spy Thriller
Brian Andrews and Jeffery Wilson (writing as 'Alex Ryan') still exhibit issues with pacing (scenes intended to be dramatic & tense often end up derailed by injudicious detail), but the encounters described in this second novel of the 'Nick Foley' series are anything but pedestrian. The authors revisit an intriguing team (a reluctant ex- US Navy Seal, a CIA Station Chief, a PLA Major, a Chinese Special-Forces commander, the "Mayor" of a literal underground criminal city, and a Chinese CDC doctor) to foil a biotech-informed worldwide plot. The characters are interesting (motivations are honestly fascinating for each of them: patriotism, loyalty, guilt, anger, love); the setting is captivating (Communist China & the Far East); the plot is satisfyingly twisty; and descriptions of military tech & tactics are accurate enough to satisfy a technothriller geek like me. In addition, there is much more well-choreographed action (firefights and hand-to-hand) in 'Hong Kong Black'.. definite plus.
Admittedly, the evil villain in this one is ludicrously cartoonish, but the rest of the novel is strikingly realistic.
MacLean Andrews's narration adds to the excellence of this recording. Signing him to a contract with Blackstone Audio to read this series was a great decision. Once again his voice-acting is "average" and his rate of reading is too slow (I recommend playback speed be set at 1.15X to best enjoy the performance), but Andrews clearly enjoys what he's reading: diction, cadence, and timbre are exemplary and - despite a tendency to overdramatic tone - emotiveness is spot-on. It's a remarkable performance.
Overall, this book rates 9 stars out of 10. I am grateful to Audible for offering it as part of the 'Plus' initiative ('Free' is always great), but it is actually worth a Credit.
[*Note: Reading the first book in the 'Nick Foley' series isn't obligatory.. but I recommend listening to 'Beijing Red' before trying this one. It will definitely improve your understanding of the characters]

good escape reading
Found and read immediately after finishing Ryan’s Beijing Red. This was an equally interesting and exciting storyline. I appreciated the Asian history lesson.
Read by a very talented voice actor - although most of his female voice impersonations made me chuckle he did a fantastic job w the male characters. Although I don’t speak any foreign languages so I don’t know if his pronunciation was correct I appreciated his confidence to try and speak those words without hesitation…
I did fast forward through some of the gruesome torture sections as it got a little too detailed for me. Despite that I enjoyed the book and hope the author writes more in the series.
