Celtic history is of particular fascination for me. I took some electives on it in university and it has remained a hobby interest of mine ever since. This book, despite the appealing nature of it, was not well executed in my opinion. The audio recording quality would make you believe it predates The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, while the actual content is inane dribble. The author leads us off on how historians are wrapped up in a conspiracy meant to discredit the Irish and offers loose ties to possible hidden motives. By the time I'd given up, approximately 1/8th of the way in, the only thing the book had said related to the subject was that Irish monks copied a lot of books. 40 minutes...they copied a lot of books. That's about the pace that you're going to get when you listen to this audio book. The ramblings of the author with some supporting arguments peppered in.
Poorly executed concept

As so many scholars do, this book sets up the dichotomy of Greco-Roman based "civilization" vs. everything else. The so-called "Irish" that saved "Civilization" were essentially priests of Roman-based Christianity, so it's more "how imperial culture saved itself".
I expected to read about how some aspect of pre-christian quintessentially Irish culture was instrumental in shaping our world in a positive and sustainable way, but no. That is not this book.
If you are looking for something that glorifies the on going damage we call "civilization", you'll love this.
Not what I thought...
