Histoire
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.

Histoire
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers. The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing.

Brilliant!
I enjoyed this as an immersive experience.
(Audio+Book)
I got this lovely book for Christmas. It is a beautifully illustrated set of stories and a welcomed edition to my Folk of the Air collection of hardcovers. It is a fast and enjoyable read. Caitlin Kelly does another fantastic job of bringing the characters and story to life. I absolutely love her rendition of Cardan.
How The King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories is a novella that shares stories that took place during Cardan’s childhood, when he first met Jude, and also after the events of The Queen of Nothing from Cardan’s perspective. So, if you haven't read the Folk of the Air Series, then you should read those first, as this book will contain spoilers.
