If you are a parent of a teen who is struggling, or you are a teen who is struggling, then keep listening. This book was written for you. How to Be Your Own Hero was written by request. The author is a mom and a teacher who works with teens every day. Alyson Reid-Larade has over 20 years of experience dealing with teens, as a high school teacher, and then as a guidance counselor. She produced this book because after using the material in class with her students, over and over again, they asked her to.
How to Be Your Own Hero deals with many teenage issues in a straightforward, non-judgmental way:
- Anxiety
- Self-esteem
- Bullying
- Relationships
- Body Image
- Drug and alcohol use
- Emotions (Feeling sad, frustrated, angry, hopeless)
- Feeling like they are not good enough, unmotivated, depressed
How to Be Your Own Hero offers solutions:
- Coping skills and coping strategies (Toward and Away)
- An understanding of how the teen brain reacts to stress
- How to identify and deal with toxic friends
- How to learn to love your body
- How to be mindful of your feelings and what they are saying
- Understanding that your past does not dictate who you can be in the future.
What Alyson Reid-Larade has to say to teens:
- You are amazing
- You have incredible resilience inside of you
- Inner peace and happiness lie within you
- You have incredible skills, talents and strengths
- You have many gifts to offer the world.

The Book I Wish I’d Had as a Teen - But is Still Valuable to Me as an Adult!
I got this book ostensibly for my 16 year old daughter. It’s full of practical and inspiring advice, stories and revelations. As a handbook to guide her, it’s been invaluable.
But the REAL story here? It’s been a godsend for me! The 50 year old mama who is doing her own healing work. I’ve consulted spiritual tomes and psychology books, energy healers and philosophers… and I can tell you, this book captures the best of everything I’ve come to learn, and includes stuff I never considered before.
Whether it’s about body image, bullying, sex or relationships - women of all ages can benefit from the author’s practical, conversationally framed advice. I found the information on how the brain functions to be incredibly useful, not only in understanding my teen better, but understanding myself in a new light.
Alyson’s tone is conversational yet passionate, direct but non judgmental. It will resonate well with teens of all kinds. At least, the teen in me was riveted;)

Important Read For Teens and Parents
Rewarding listen, regarding resilience & self esteem for North American young adults in their developing years...not to mention great for their parents! Especially important in times where challenges come from “reality” and “virtual reality” with force and speed. I'd recommended for: teens; parents of teens/tweens; and educators.
