April 7, 1944 - This date marks the successful escape of two Slovak prisoners from one of the most heavily-guarded and notorious concentration camps of Nazi Germany. The escapees, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler, fled over 100 miles to be the first to give the graphic and detailed descriptions of the atrocities of Auschwitz.
Originally published in the early 1960s, I Escaped from Auschwitz is the striking autobiography of none other than Rudolf Vrba himself. Vrba details his life leading up to, during, and after his escape from his 21-month internment in Auschwitz. Vrba and Wetzler manage to evade Nazi authorities looking for them and make contact with the Jewish council in Zilina, Slovakia, informing them about the truth of the "unknown destination" of Jewish deportees all across Europe. This first-hand report alerted Western authorities, such as Pope Pius XII, Winston Churchill, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, to the reality of Nazi annihilation camps - information that until then had only been recognized as nasty rumors.

Very well told.
This book was a very in-depth and eye-opening reality check on what happened with the Nazi concentration camps in Auschwitz.

Heart breaking
It’s so insane to think these happenings were less than 100 years ago. My only hope is that people REALLY listen to his triumphant story of escape and pay attention so these happenings aren’t repeated.

EXCELLENT
A must read for Holocaust history buffs! The book was very well written and not dry . The narrator did a great job at keeping me engaged. I loved it so much I listened to it twice.

Powerful Account
I couldn’t put this one down. A must read. I would hope that accounts like this would stop such atrocities from ever happening again but sadly I know in some parts of the world horrors are still happening.

I escaped from Auschwitz
This was an astonishing book. Although I am not Jewish, my parents migrated from Poland to Canada in the early 1930s. it is horrifying to think that our family or our neighbors might have been captured and taken to a place like Auschwitz: every person needs to hear the first hand account of the experiences. One simply has to look at what is happening around the world currently to appreciate how important it is to know what happened and what might happen again. Do listen to this book and discuss it with your family.

First hand reports
Vrba didn’t just “see” Auschwitz and escape with a few stories, he survived it for years and saw SO MUCH. This is the most important book on Auschwitz as it lays it all out, what they were up to, and what took place, in detail. This is the man who escaped to tell the world, so his voice has weight. At first they didn’t believe him, but eventually they did. He managed to shock and get the attention of Churchill, Roosevelt and the Pope. His words made a difference. A brutally difficult listen, but so important.
There are three appendices that I didn’t listen to, containing his first report and more. I was at capacity.

Excellent performance
This well written and very detailed firsthand account of the Holocaust was made given the performance it deserved. The account was read with emotion without being emotional, and made listening to such a heavy subject more bearable.

Truly shocking and amazing
The first hand account of life in Auschwitz and the adding personalities and depth to the people see as black and white stills or statistics is what I found most amazing and depressing at the same time.
I’d highly recommend this one, but it is utterly heartbreaking and shocking - so be warned!
Side note: for the narration, and this may be more a personal preference, I didn’t like the - what felt at times to be over acting with the emotions. As a reader/listener I prefer to add my own emotion to the text

His very good memory to the small details after so many years. Basically a lot made up BS.
Years ago I had audio book and was only about 8 hours long. It was under same title. That book was very good. This one got 18 hours or so and there are so many details that it sounds totally unlikely he can remember after so many years, not to mention he has been in distress.
I have been reading book and other audio book, but this one is totally unacceptable. No wonder people have problems to believe what really happened when you publish this garbage. This book is published just for, actually I don't know who.
You can get really good book from the Vrba.
But not this on.
I remember 8 hour audio book, I believe under the same title and it was 5 stars. But not this one, but not this one.
