À propos de cet audio

On October 13, 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying members of the Old Christians rugby team - and many of their friends and family members - crashed into the Andes Mountains. I Had to Survive offers a gripping and heartrending recollection of the harrowing, brink-of-death experience that propelled survivor Roberto Canessa to become one of the world's leading pediatric cardiologists.

As he tended to his wounded teammates amid the devastating carnage of the wreck, rugby player Roberto Canessa, a second-year medical student at the time, realized that no one on Earth was luckier: He was alive - and for that, he should be eternally grateful. As the starving group struggled beyond the limits of what seemed possible, Canessa played a key role in safeguarding his fellow survivors, eventually trekking with a companion across the hostile mountain range for help. This fine line between life and death became the catalyst for the rest of his life.

This uplifting tale of hope and determination, solidarity and ingenuity, gives vivid insight into a world-famous story. Canessa also draws a unique and fascinating parallel between his work as a doctor performing arduous heart surgeries on infants and unborn babies and the difficult life-changing decisions he was forced to make in the Andes. With grace and humanity, Canessa prompts us to ask ourselves, what do you do when all the odds are stacked against you?

Stunning story linked to regular life

This was a beautiful listen. So many survival stories are limited to the facts of what happened. This story tells those facts, in a compelling and fascinating narrative, but it goes a step further and links those experiences to existence in regular life, making this story, incredibly relatable and inspirational.

Glad I got to finally read the story. I was about 19 when this accident happened. I heard about it, but not until now, got to hear the whole story.
For those who survived the horrific ordeal, I’m so sorry. You have my heart felt condolences on the loss of your friends, family, team mates , team staff etc.
I appreciate your bravery in writing this.
May God bless the rest of your lives!

Incredible survival story

The author tells the story of his survival from a plan crash in the Andes mountains in winter. I read this book after watching the docuseries on Netflix.

The story is told from the perspective of the two individuals who walked for days to find help for the group. Having to survive doing unthinkable things like turning to cannibalism, pushed the group to go to any lengths to try and survive. After rescue missions all but came up empty due to the plane crashes location, not only did a parent go out on a journey to try and find his son, but the author set out on his own journey to try and find help.

A blanket made of insulation from the plane, held together by plane wiring, was all that kept the boys sheltered from the blisteringly low temperatures at night in the Andes as they trekked to find help. Not only is this book a story of extreme survival and ingenuity, it’s also a story of hope.

Once the plane crash story was told, the author goes on to share of his life years later and the influence the crash had on his experiences as a physician working with children with heart disease. As well as the impact his journey has had on his own family.

At times the story could get bogged down and feeling as if they were just listing a timeline of events instead of sharing a story, but the narrator kept the story sufficiently engaging to keep listening to. I also kept in mind that this novel is I believe a translation of the original one that was written in another language. Although minor, this would have impact on the style of writing and storytelling, as well as an impact on some of the language used, which is merely an approximation of the original. I look forward to reading the authors other book, Society in the Snow, to learn more of his survival story.
