À propos de cet audio

A group of 27 scientists and explorers are stranded in Antarctica.

Residing in a station known as Shackleton, they are studying the seismic activity of the region. An eruption of the nearby volcano, Mount Erebus, soon sends quakes throughout the continent with devastating results.

All radio communication has been disabled by the breakdown of the magnetic field. Evacuation is unlikely. No one knows whether they survived the icequake, and their station is now moving two kilometres north each day with the strong aftershocks. They are on their own, with limited food and resources.

Do they stay put and risk being caught in the next series of icequakes and avalanches? Or do they pack up and trek over dangerous territories to the neighbouring station?

Icequake is a gripping prophetic sci-fi disaster novel, full of excitement and danger in every chapter.

Good story, a bit dated

If you can get past the sexism it’s a good adventure story. It could be updated for a younger audience

"Acceptable" Hard Science Fiction

Canadian Author Crawford Kilian has no background in Geophysics, Climate Science, or Astrophysics - but fashions a plausible world-changing event that feeds off of all three disciplines. A fictional Antarctic research station witnesses the collapse of the earth's magnetic field, the eruption of a sky-blackening dormant volcano ('Erebus'), and the rapid dissolution of the Continental Ice Shelf. An embedded reporter, panicking scientists, and desperate support personnel struggle to survive the elimination of the ozone layer, continuous volcanic explosons, and repeated tremendous aftershocks.
Unfortunately, Kilian isn't great at describing 'Deep Impact' and 'Day after Tomorrow'- level cataclysms and his characters frankly aren't that interesting. I found my mind frequently wandering during the chronicle - not really invested in caring about any of the events or people involved.

Podium Audio contribute to the "ho-hum" quality of the book by enlisting Tim Campbell to read it. To be fair, his diction, timbre, and cadence are commendable (and the technical support on the recording is exemplary), but Campbell's overall tone is disinterested - it sounds like he's collecting a paycheck - and his voice-acting (including cartoonishly basso male character interpretations) is occasionally grating.

Altogether, this recording of 'Icequake' merits 5 stars out of 10. It's a reasonable distraction if you can get it as a 'Plus' option (as I did).. but paying a Credit would be questionable.

A chill ride...

Awesome book but if you don’t like the cold 🥶 then you will soon feel like an icicle. There is a lot of action and I was holding my breath waiting to hear what happens next. I would liked to have had more in fighting and arguing, complaining and misery...as I think that being isolated as they are that some aggression would seep through. Also more scary moments like when Steve was barely hanging on in the crevasse. I believe that there are more books in this series so I ado hope that they explore more about what’s happened. The narrator was superb...handling all those voices must be hard but he worked through it. 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶

Terrible, awful, painful to listen to

I’m glad I didn’t pay for this. I’ve been listening for 2 hours and can’t take it anymore.

Boring

Thank goodness this book was free. I just about died from boredom. I must say though that the narrator does hold some promise. He was OK with this book. I have not heard anything else he’s done so who knows.
