À propos de cet audio
A deep dive into the immune system that will forever change how you think about your body, from the creator of the popular science YouTube channel Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell.
“Through wonderful analogies and a genius for clarifying complex ideas, Immune is a truly brilliant introduction to the human body’s vast system for fighting infections and other threats.” (John Green, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Fault in Our Stars)
You wake up and feel a tickle in your throat. Your head hurts. You’re mildly annoyed as you get the kids ready for school and dress for work yourself. Meanwhile, an epic war is being fought, just below your skin. Millions are fighting and dying for you to be able to complain as you head out the door.
So what, exactly, is your immune system?
Second only to the human brain in its complexity, it is one of the oldest and most critical facets of life on Earth. Without it, you would die within days. In Immune, Philipp Dettmer, the brains behind the most popular science channel on YouTube, takes listeners on a journey through the fortress of the human body and its defenses. There is a constant battle of staggering scale raging within us, full of stories of invasion, strategy, defeat, and noble self-sacrifice. In fact, in the time you’ve been reading this, your immune system has probably identified and eradicated a cancer cell that started to grow in your body.
Each chapter delves into an element of the immune system, including defenses like antibodies and inflammation as well as threats like bacteria, allergies, and cancer, as Dettmer reveals why boosting your immune system is actually nonsense, how parasites sneak their way past your body’s defenses, how viruses work, and what goes on in your wounds when you cut yourself.
Enlivened by immersive descriptions, Immune turns one of the most intricate, interconnected, and confusing subjects - immunology - into a gripping adventure through an astonishing alien landscape. Immune is a vital and remarkably fun crash course in what is arguably, and increasingly, the most important system in the body.

The answers to these questions are right behind our eyes. The greatest technology we have ever discovered on our planet is the three-pound organ carried in the vault of the skull. This book is not simply about what the brain is; it is about what it does. The magic of the brain is not found in the parts it’s made of but in the way those parts unceasingly reweave themselves in an electric, living fabric.

Scientists are confident that life exists elsewhere in the universe. Yet rather than taking a realistic approach to what aliens might be like, we imagine that life on other planets is the stuff of science fiction. The time has come to abandon our fantasies of space invaders and movie monsters and place our expectations on solid scientific footing. But short of alien's landing in New York City, how do we know what they are like?

What does it mean to “be you” - that is, to have a specific, conscious experience of the world around you and yourself within it? There may be no more elusive or fascinating question. Historically, humanity has considered the nature of consciousness to be a primarily spiritual or philosophical inquiry, but scientific research is now mapping out compelling biological theories and explanations for consciousness and selfhood.

Carl Zimmer investigates one of the biggest questions of all: What is life? The answer seems obvious until you try to seriously answer it. Is the apple sitting on your kitchen counter alive, or is only the apple tree it came from deserving of the word? If we can’t answer that question here on Earth, how will we know when and if we discover alien life on other worlds? The question hangs over some of society’s most charged conflicts - whether a fertilized egg is a living person, for example, and when we ought to declare a person legally dead.

In this incisive, fast-paced history, New York Times best-selling author Arthur Herman brilliantly reveals how Lenin and Wilson rewrote the rules of modern geopolitics. Through the end of World War I, countries marched into war only to increase or protect their national interests. After World War I, countries began going to war over ideas. Together, Lenin and Wilson unleashed the disruptive ideologies that would sweep the world, from nationalism and globalism to Communism and terrorism, and that continue to shape our world today.

Today we think statistics are the enemy, numbers used to mislead and confuse us. That’s a mistake, Tim Harford says in The Data Detective. We shouldn’t be suspicious of statistics - we need to understand what they mean and how they can improve our lives: they are, at heart, human behavior seen through the prism of numbers and are often “the only way of grasping much of what is going on around us”.

Ce que les critiques en disent
“Immune is science communication at its most lucid and exhilarating, a tour de force of demystification. Dettmer maintains an intimate relationship with the reader while revealing the Homeric dramas that routinely unfold within us. It has a vivid clarity that never comes at the expense of the science — or the wonder, as if an entire scientific field had been translated into human.” (Ann Druyan, author of Cosmos: Possible Worlds)
“Philipp Dettmer has a unique skill to show us the beauty and complexity of our world as it is revealed through a scientific understanding of it. In Immune he takes us on a tour through our own body and allows us to see and understand how our immune system actually works. A beautiful book about a complex system that our life depends on.” (Max Roser, founder of Our World in Data)
“Immune reads like it’s a riveting sci-fi novel, as Philipp Dettmer takes you on a journey into the body for an up-close look at the armies of expert warriors, rogue gladiators, and stealthy detectives that protect you in the daily war against trillions of ruthless microbe enemies. By the end of the book, I understood my entire body far better than I ever had before. Immune is a delightful treat for the curious.” (Tim Urban, creator of Wait But Why)
“Bringing both insight and humor to an important and relevant topic, Dettmer’s book is essential reading, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.” (Library Journal)

Immunity, simplified!
Explained in such a simple way, even a person who has no interest in biology would understand. I can personally verify that. If all text books was written like this, we would have bumped the average IQ of students by at least 20 percentage points. The immense complexity explained here is just crazy. Will need to go through a second time for memory retention because the material is just too complex.

Must Listen
This is one of the best science book that I have ever listened. As someone who has always been interested in science, I always find science books interesting to read and hard to digest. It often contains too much detail that makes the topic accurate, but boring, which is why I enjoyed immue so much. This books explained so much detail about our immunity system, yet still manage to keep the topic fun and interesting that after I finished the book I actually craved for more. highly recommend for people that wants to learn about our immunity in a hurry.

Immunology for everyone :)
I wish this book existed when I took my immunology course in college. I'm sure my grade would have been much better! Don't get me wrong, this book is not an immunology textbook. Rather it is a collection of analogies, stories, jokes and simplified explanations that help the reader grasp the general principles of how our immune system function. It describes the roles of the major parts of the immune system, what happens when they don't function, and how they work together to keep us healthy.
This book is written in language that the average person can understand and provides and understanding of health and illness that many people do not get to learn in school.
Side note: If you love Kurzgesagt videos, you'll enjoy this audio book. It has the same narrator as their English YouTube videos. And if buy the print version as well, the illustrations are done by the same artist as their YouTube videos.

Immune system for dummies
I knew our immune system is complicated before I read the book. But I never imagine how intricately everything works together to keep us generally healthy. And the number of different sub-systems that all comes together is mind boggling. The author did a pretty good job making all of these understandable for a layman. Sure, many details had been glossed over to make it understandable by the layman ... but that's the whole point of the book. So I would say objective achieved.
That said, there are parts of the book where I thought the author could have gone in and provided more details.
Overall, a very informative book. I have learned a lot. Next time I get a cold, I am going to have a lot more appreciation and respect for how the whole system works together to help me get better.

Amazing and brilliant
I am not sure how I can describe it but it is one of the most amazing book I have ever read. Symphony of immune system. had been well played in this book. Well written with the best simplicity approach to open up the one the most complex creature in the world. With level of high rate of immune diseases in our society, this is a great window to understand and appreciate the functionality of it and respect the complecitu which keep us alive , every second of our life.
After listening to this Audio I purchase the book as reference to go back to review it.
Thanks to the writer for such a great book.
