À propos de cet audio

"To step on board a steamer in a Spanish port, and three hours later to land in a country without a guide-book, is a sensation to rouse the hunger of the repletest sight-seer. The sensation is attainable by any one who will take the trouble to row out into the harbour of Algeciras and scramble onto a little black boat headed across the straits...."

A classic of travel writing, In Morocco is Edith Wharton's remarkable account of her journey to that country during World War I. With her characteristic sense of adventure, Wharton set out to explore Morocco and its people, traveling by military jeep to Rabat, Moulay Idriss, Fez, and Marrakech, from the Atlantic coast to the high Atlas. Along the way, she witnessed religious ceremonies and ritual dances, visited the opulent palaces of the Sultan, and was admitted to the mysterious world of his harem.

This was great!

I haven’t read Edith Wharton before, but have a few of her books waiting in my classics to-read stack, so was surprised to find her as the author of this travel book. It was really delightful. Visiting Morocco when she did, long before tourism of any sort had taken hold, was more than eye opening. How blessed I felt to see the country through her eyes and her wonderful writing! She was courteously inviting to meet locals and witnessed a number of rituals that had largely been closed to Westerners. I was particularly interested to learn of the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, which she described quite well (and led me to Google the site and learn about the restoration efforts). She also went into the history of Morocco, but included this later in the book, which allowed the initial part of the book to flow naturally. Definitely recommended.
