Into Africa ushers us into the meeting of these remarkable men. In 1866, when Livingstone journeyed into the heart of the African continent in search of the Nile's source, the land was rough, unknown to Europeans, and inhabited by man-eating tribes. The man sent to find him was an orphan and a drifter who had great ambition but little success to show for it. I never knew...

In listening to this book I discovered that the only thing I really new about Livingstone was that he was in Africa and Stanley found him and said "Doctor Livingstone, I presume." The circumstances and the effort needed by all parties was in turn exhausting, catastrophic, and deadly.
It's a great piece of history.

Read it many times before but the narrator...

is unbelievable...love this story but John Lee really brings it to life. His accents, elocution is the best I've heard.

Absolutely wonderful and immensely fascinating

One is delved into a time not so long ago yet evasively distant to a world in which life seems to have held much excitement and awe of unknown lands and their exploration and exploits. An absolute recommendation.

Livingstone

The book is very interesting. I enjoy the narrator’s attempt at mimicking accents. I did not like the authors suggestion to Livingstone’s possible promiscuous living. Otherwise a well done book.

Very thorough telling

I really enjoyed this book. I have always wondered about this particular part of history. Great narration truly made it come to life. Great job! Thank you.

Epic

This truly is an epic tale. In terms of sequence, I recently listened to How I Found Livingstone in Central Africa, by Henry Stanley, first. It was the gaps in my knowledge after that book that that caused me to read Into Africa. If you are a methodical reader, you may want to start with Into Africa first, however I quite enjoyed the way things unfolded for me, with Stanley’s hunt for Livingston first. In terms of slavery, Livingston abhorred it, influencing Stanley’s thinking on the matter, as he observed the dignity Livingston treated the slaves that were part of his entourage.
