This is the true story of a 24-hour period on Everest when members of three separate expeditions were caught in a storm and faced a battle against hurricane-force winds, exposure, and the effects of altitude, which ended the worst single-season death toll in the peak's history.
In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead.
Krakauer's audiobook is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. Sobering Listen
Hard to stop listening to this gripping story. What a struggle. I wish all the best to the survivors and to the loved ones of those who perished.

A Disaster Waiting to Happen
Although this story flowed well and kept my attention throught I do not understand the phylosofy and the desire to "climb Mount Everest". The climb took place in 1996, when Everest was literally crawling with would be climbers. They never really acclimated to the thin air, including the guides and Sherpas. By the time they reached the summit they were falling down, wandering off into nowhere and dying. It was a tragedy and a mess. Mount Everest is a goddess to some, however she is littered with garbage,, not to mention dead bodies. It is all so sad and I believe it is time to give the mountain a rest and rethink her purpose for the world. Gayle

Enjoyed it.
Sometimes hard to follow without concentrating intently. The story is much worth listening to and I found myself googling the expedition members to find out even more of their history beyond the info in the book.

Great book
This book was an odyssey. I can recommend it as an adventure and an education. It’s not all joyful because it’s a true story. I am glad I read it.

Great book and narration!
Really enjoyed this book by Jon Krakauer and the accompanying narration.
It was an exciting story that was tense, suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the listen.
Philip Franklin's narration help immerse me in Krakauer's journey from hope to excitement to despair and desperation.
Would recommend!

Very well done
I'm not a "mountain guy" whatsoever and can't understand those that do for the life of me, but the book was a terrific read and I couldn't stop reading.... Very Well written and seemingly from the perspective of someone who was very humble. You see some say he he is a know it all who has perfect recollection of everything, but I don't read it that way. After reading, I still can't imagine what this group and others went through and I think it is completely naive for anyone to think they do, even people who had done climbs before.

So addicting !
This was so good, I've listened to it twice in the past year. I like how Jon adds background notes about Tibetian words or customs and is careful not to pass judgement while providing tonnes of details. Highly recommend.

Excellent
This was very interesting. it's a no BS account of what happened on the mountain disaster, with alot of backstory and context prior to the events.
Its not fluffed up or made dramatic, but naturally keep you interested through its detailed recount.
