Description

Honor and betrayal fuel a caste-shattering revolution in the action-packed new novel from the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Red Rising Trilogy.

Ten years after the events of Morning Star, Darrow and the Rising are battling the remaining Gold loyalist forces and are closer than ever to abolishing the color-coded caste system of Society for good. But new foes will emerge from the shadows to threaten the imperfect victory Darrow and his friends have earned. Pierce Brown expands the size and scope of his impressive Red Rising universe with new characters, enemies, and conflicts among the stars.

Another Entertaining Red Rising novel

this was another great book. Only 1 criticism, but unfortunately it's a large one. The narrator for the Lysander chapter's was awful, nearly unlistenable. No inflection, no emotion, absolutely awful. It ruined the book when those chapters came on. It's really unfortunate because the others were great.

Continues the series amazingly

This book does a nice job to continue the series. It was not the best book in the series but it held its own. It took me awhile to get use to the different narators as I would have rather just had Raynolds as I love his voice. The other narators are really good but no my favourites. #Audible1

pretty good performances but an uneven story

Definitely the weakest of the 4 books so far, but still good nonetheless.

80% of the book is a vote, due mostly to some horrible pacing (Lysander's narrative should be a separate short story) and otherwise lengthy exposition/dialogue devoted to side characters who mean very little to the overall plot/development of the man characters. But the beginning and end chapters are good, interesting and more akin to the Peirce Brown that we know. Darrow is also just so frustrating in this, his actions and disregard for those closest to him making little sense. I did tire of Lyria's voice relying purely on accent to convey emotion (rather than being an accent that still conveys nuance).

Different but in a good way.

Drastic shift in perspective from the first three novels. Seeing the world from multiple angles and colours adds an unexpectedly welcome depth to Pierce Browns already amazing world. Definitely enjoyed the ensemble cast.

book 4and 5 have multiple narrators and it's really bad, it messes up the flow of the book and creates a painful audio experience

Pretty good

I loved the story, was not a fan of the different narrators I thought the original narration from the previous books was great. Also wasn’t a fan of the Lyria storyline felt like it was just there for exposition and felt out of place to me everything else was great.

Pierce has done it again !

I was kinda worried about this book considering I devoured the first three. This one is a bit different written from 4 perspectives instead of just Darrow. It was fantastic ! I think pierce brown is easily my new favourite author . I honestly can’t believe these books aren’t just incredibly famous !!

Great book

The story is epic and cutting, great emotional highs and lows throughout. TGR, great as always. Aeden Moloney shone above, she absolutely encompassed her character and injected so much emotion into her performance. I found Lysander's narrator, Julian, to be slightly monotone. There are some truely epic moments in his story arc that the narrator fails to capture the gravity of, even though he's easy to listen to the rest of the time. The audio mixing is not great, volumes are constantly too loud or too quiet between narrators. Near the end of the book all the narrators are at relatively the same volume, but are somehow too quiet to hear through my wearable speaker. All this aside, still 5/5 for me.

Terrible choices caused great disappoontment

To start, the story was well written as always

The biggest failure was that the original trilogy was 100% through Darrows eyes and then instead of the intended trilogy, they turn it into a linger series and this 4th book is fro the POV of 3 additional people, not just Darrow. The first time I heard a different voice I was bewildered, and after 3 new voices I wanted to quit.

Lysamder's narrator was the worst I have ever heard, he sounded like an engineer reading a physics textbook. Spoke way too fast, no voice inflection to create emotion and all the voices sounded the same. Siri would have been a better choice.

Efrom's narrator was not great to start, but improved as the book progressed. Still difficult to know who is speaking but at least it had some emotion to it. Average st best.

Lyria's narrator was really weird to start but you got used to it. The emotion was way too much as it sounded like she was always crying. It was like a monotone of emotion.

The biggest mistake was trying to expand a fantastic trilogy that was well loved. Of they would have been consistent and had it continue through Darrow's eyes, it would have worked, but when you change everything about the presentation and delivery, it is nowhere near the same as the trilogy, it didn't work and was a huge mistake.

The better choice would have been to start a completely new series with the same characters. Since this book took place 10 years in the future, that would have worked great. It is no longer a story of the Red Rising, but instead what happened after the Red Rose.

When less than 30% of the story included Darrow and you can listen for hours without hearing his voice, it was like a dagger in the back to what I invested in the original trilogy.

Don't get me wrong, the story, while not nearly as action packed as the previous books, was very well written and was the perfect beginning to completely new adventures. The series can continue for as long as the author desires with how it is now set up, but it was a huge mistake to make it an expansion of the successful trilogy. This is the perfect spinoff to keep Darrow going while making the universe infinitely bigger.

The story is worth the listen, just fight the urge to quit after 5 hours and consider it just an expansion of the world and you will enjoy it. If you are expecting a continuation of the trilogy in the same form, you will be very disappointed and maybe even upset
