About the Book

Iskocēs Tipiskak: A Spark in the Dark

In this extraordinary and inspiring debut memoir, John Langan starts from the bottom in life, losing his father to suicide and step-dad to drugs. John overcomes blatant racism, poverty, violence, alcohol, and a drug environment by holding his cultural identity close to him while still losing so much, but gaining life and love in the darkness, keeping his spark burning for others in hopes of building a bigger fire.

Powerful

This is a very powerful book from an inspirational Saskatoon police officer. It is a book that should be read by anyone wanting to learn more about indigenous spiritual culture and the trauma and experiences of Indigenous families brought about by colonization and residential schools. John was able to overcome many of these challenges while still practicing his spiritual beliefs and maintaining close family ties. This is a great read!

Heartfelt and Impactful

I was given a free copy of Iskocēs Tipiskak for an honest review and this book hits so close to home with the true grit of the realities and struggles our indigenous families face with intergenerational trauma. The book shares heart felt stories that need to be heard in order to work toward reconciliation. I can see how this book will be used to help younger generations through their healing journeys.

More than just a mile in another man's shoes

The combination of personal life experience as a First Nations person in Canada coupled with enough teachings to let anyone get a decent concept of various traditions is fantastic. I learned a great deal from this book, and by the end I wish there were more of it. John also made me laugh a few times.
