À propos de cet audio

E. Lynn Harris' blend of rich, romantic storytelling and controversial contemporary issues like race and bisexuality have found an enthusiastic and diverse audience across America. His second novel, Just As I Am, picks up where Invisible Life left off, introducing Harris' appealing and authentic characters to a new set of joys, conflicts, and choices.

Raymond, a young black lawyer from the South, struggles to come to terms with his sexuality and with the grim reality of AIDS. Nicole, an aspiring singer/actress, experiences frustration in both her career and in her attempts to find a genuine love relationship. Both characters share an eclectic group of friends who challenge them, and the listener, to look at themselves and the world around them through different eyes.

By portraying Nicole's and Raymond's joys as well as their pain, Harris never ceases to remind us that life, like love, is about self-acceptance. In this vivid portrait of contemporary black life, with all its pressures and the complications of bisexuality, AIDS, and racism, Harris confirms a faith in the power of love - love of all kinds - to thrill and to heal, which will warm the hearts of listeners everywhere.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Just As I Am more than delivers on the promise of Invisible Life. Harris gives his readers a refreshing view of African-American achievement, a touching characterization of a man living with AIDS, and a sensitive depiction of gay/straight friendships that is much to be hoped for in the world outside the book's pages." Soap opera

If you like soap operas, you'll like this. Frankly , I'm getting tired of it. You just want to slap every character in the book and tell him or her to "just get over it!"
The good

Its full of diverse characters both gay and straight. There is enough of story to keep you interested though at times the storylines are going around in circles. I'm at chaprter 20 right now and really couldn't care less what happens next. The biggest problem for me it feels very dated. It is a story stuck in the early nineties and the world has moved on. Advancements in AIDS treatment and gay marriage make some of the sub plots here obsolete. Yes hats off to Harris for writing such a narrative but I like my soap operas a bit more juicy, a bit more sleezy and full of over the top plotlines. Finally while there a diverse cast of characters, they are all great looking fit to a tee and of of course either quite successful or getting there. Harris tries to make them look flaud and dealing with problems but their problems are quite mundane. Maybe I'll finish the book but looking at this review I can't see devoting the time.
