Falling in love at a young age, circumstances arise that keep the two apart. With thoughts of her constantly in his mind, he carries her locket with him his entire life and relies on it to remember her with. Orphaned at the age of 15, he begins a 15-year journey throughout the western United States where he experiences all the adventures that the Old West had to offer. 

Back at home, on the ranch, in 1890, he settles in to a rancher’s life until his entrepreneurial spirit takes him to Houston. While there he becomes involved in the oil business, hotel development, and banking becoming very successful at all three. 

At the conclusion, he has accepted his fate and feels that his life has been a failure because his love for only one woman and his desire to spend his life with her was never fulfilled. This all changes on the day of his death when he receives the news that allows him to die in peace, a completed man.
