In 1902, at the age of 11, Carl Panzram broke into a neighbour’s home and stole some apples, a pie, and a revolver. As a frequent troublemaker, the court decided to make an example of him and placed him into the care of the Minnesota State Reform School. During his two-year detention, Carl was repeatedly beaten, humiliated, and raped by the school staff.

At 15-years old, Carl enlisted in the army by lying about his age but his career was short-lived. He was dishonorably discharged for stealing army supplies and was sent to the military prison, Fort Leavenworth, to serve the maximum sentence for his crimes.

When Carl left Fort Leavenworth in 1910, the experience had sculpted him into the man that he would remain for the rest of his life. His hatred for mankind was firmly ingrained and he set out to do unto others before they could do unto him. His lifelong campaign of terror could finally begin and nothing could stand in his way.

Kill 'Em All is a chilling and gripping account of one of the most brutal and gruesome true crime stories in American history. Ryan Green’s riveting narrative draws the listener into the real-live horror experienced by the victims and has all the elements of a classic thriller.

A Bit Too Sensationalist

Doubtless the most chilling characteristic of stories like this one is that they truly happened. It makes it easier to picture oneself in the described scenarios, rendering  the events mesmerizing. This book takes that attribute of the True Crime genre and runs with it. Carl Panzram was a brutal Sociopath - and the role of repeated head injuries, childhood abuse, and institutionalization (with actual torture) in his development into a cold-blooded rapist/childkiller is fascinating - but Ryan Green chooses to let those elements remain implied. Rather, Green goes for straight entertainment: heavily dramatizing the interactions between Panzram, law enforcement officials, and victims to lay out gut-wrenching accounts. He taps effectively into the viscerally-affecting aspects of the crimes, but supplies little more of the edifying than a competent writer for Investigation Discovery might provide.

I must say that Steve White is a professional reader. He does a very nice job reading 'Kill 'Em All' with emotiveness, admirable timbre, and an appropriately sombre tone. The main drawback to White's narration is a slightly slow pace (speeding playback speed to 1.10X helped), but this is a quality audio product.

I value True Crime exposés for their inside look into forensic investigation, how our criminal justice system catches and punishes deviants, and how truly monstrous people end up in our midst. The "shock value" of the criminal circumstances lends gravitas to the phenomenon of sociopathy/psychopathy, but that's really a peripheral part of their attraction for me. If getting your pulse pounding is more important for you, this book is an excellent value - spend the Credit. I can imagine happily listening to this book during a boring night shift.
I personally found this audiobook somewhat lacking, albeit still worth 6 stars out of 10.
