À propos de cet audio

A work of art. A mysterious number. A secret worth killing for.

When reclusive artist Gabriel Quinn is gunned down outside a gallery on Oxford High Street, Detective Inspector Bridget Hart investigates the world of contemporary art, where paintings can change hands for millions in the auction room.

Bridget is convinced that the last words spoken by the artist - a mysterious code of eight digits and a letter - are key to unraveling the mystery of his death.

But when her ex-husband, Ben, now a senior detective with the Metropolitan Police in London, shows up with new information about the murdered man, Bridget's personal and professional lives are brought crashing together with dramatic consequences.

Solid book; good narration other than B-A-D attempt at American accents.

Overall, this book has solid plotting, and complicated characters. (No one-dimensional people here! :-) ) There IS one GLARING, really obvious mistake, that I’ll note at the end of this review, since my comment will be a spoiler.

The narrator performs very well overall, with great cadence and range of emotion. However, she appears to be (subconsciously?) getting back at all of the Americans who have performed British accents quite hideously. (E.g. of one of these REALLY bad attempts, an attempt that’s actually LESS horrible than many others, is Keanu Reeves’s there-not-there accent in Dracula.)s

This narrator voices a TEXAN woman as having a mostly Northern-Minnesota accent, that at times turns into an East Coast accent. There is ZERO drawl in her speech!!! Her husband doesn’t fare much better, not at all sounding like a Texan, but at least the narrator doesn’t give HIM a Fargo accent!

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Okay, now on to the glaringly obvious mistake in the plot:

someone is shown nude pictures of themselves, and immediately knows that they’re fake; it’s their head on someone else’s body. The person states this over and over again, with no-one believing them. NEVER ONCE does the person offer to show what their body ACTUALLY looks like IRL!!! They don’t even do this when it’s obvious that ztheir lawyer believes the photos are genuine. W.T.?!?!? Right.

And, even LESS believable (the person IS freaking out inside, after all, owing to the faked photos having been sent to a teenager) , the person’s lawyer doesn’t think of that, or even of the less-humiliating idea that the person show their SAME-GENDER lawyer what they look like naked IRL.

That is a REALLY bad error. Sigh. At least the author doesn’t perpetuate the (often-used in both books and video-based media) myth that the facial expression a person displays immediately prior to their death remains after the person dies. Think about that for a sec.; when someone dies, their muscles relax, to the extent that they poop themselves. Yet their facial muscles don’t relax?!? Oy vey.
