À propos de cet audio
*NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!*
From “one of those special writers capable of delivering both poetry and plot” (The New York Times Book Review) an immersive historical novel inspired by the true story of a woman physician in 15th-century China—perfect for fans of Lisa See’s classics Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane.
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.
From a young age, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses, many of which relate to childbearing, alongside a young midwife-in-training, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud, no lotus, they tell themselves: from adversity beauty can bloom.
But when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. Yunxian is to act like a proper wife—embroider bound-foot slippers, recite poetry, give birth to sons, and stay forever within the walls of the family compound, the Garden of Fragrant Delights.
How might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? How might the power of friendship support or complicate these efforts? A captivating story of women helping each other, Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a triumphant reimagining of the life of one person who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would be considered remarkable today.

Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

For young Peony, betrothed to a suitor she has never met, lyrics from The Peony Pavilion mirror her own longings. In the garden of the Chen Family Villa, amid the scent of ginger, green tea, and jasmine, a small theatrical troupe is performing scenes from this epic opera, a live spectacle few females have ever seen. Like the heroine in the drama, Peony is the cloistered daughter of a wealthy family, trapped like a good-luck cricket in a bamboo-and-lacquer cage.

Histoire
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Such a lovely account of the life of a Chinese woman passionate about medicine in the 1400s. I appreciate the amount of research that must have gone into the preparations. The story engaged me immediately and I was curious until the end. Great writing. loved it.

A book I will remember forever
This book made me feel discomfort, upset, sadness, anger and hopefulness. It is such a powerful description of human experience. The spirit of the sickening practice of footbinding is so well described, that I will no longer dismiss it with a "why?". It is a window into the rich Chinese culture and history, and a history of women, with flaws and beauties, feelings, regrets, hopes and ambitions. This book is painful, but I loved it. The narration is flawless and adds a valuable dimension to the story.

New favorite book
Historical book about women helping each other. Refreshing to see women portrayed in a very realistic way. I hate seeing woman jealousy in fiction because it is often so poorly represented, but this book was very good at making the distinction. Jealousy is not a focus point, but the little there is is treated in a very mature way. I love learning about history and this book broadened my horizons. I will now seek out more history about cultures I’m unfamiliar with, this book was an absolute gem.

Focused on 1 single character. Too long for me.
This is a beautiful and interesting description of what life in China was like for women in the 15th Century. However, the novel is a 1 character story. The other people focus on the development of that main character. I found it too detailed, too long and I stopped after 5 hours. I couldn't see myself listening to 8 more hours of the same.
