À propos de cet audio
DCI Kenny Murrain sees, hears and feels things that others do not. It’s a gift but also a curse.
When he wakes to the phantom sound of screaming, he knows a murder has been committed, but not where or why. Then a woman’s body is found in a Stockport hotel room. It’s a murder that seems both frenzied and carefully planned, the scene expertly cleansed of any evidence.
Over the following days, more bodies are discovered. The same frenzied attacks, the same meticulous planning. The same killer. The victims all have links to one man, a police colleague with a dark past. But Murrain discovers a more unexpected connection - with Marie Donovan, a former undercover officer now part of Murrain’s own team.

“An intriguing police procedural, with a formidable sleuth...” (The Sunday Telegraph)

worth the listen

Here's why. It was a solidly ok procedural. That's it. The characters were ok, the plot was ok, the writing was ok (although there were some repetitious phrases and, shudder, the term "gorgeously warm" was used it made me cringe). It is the definition of a 3 star read. No complaints, it passed the time. I might check out the next book, depending on how interesting the mystery sounds.
not for me

Unfortunately, the author packs the tale with diverse elements like a DCI with psychic powers, a DS with a stalker boyfriend & a mysterious past, a dirty Cop involved in shady entanglements, and a suspicious dirtbag playboy colleague from another division. The result is a plethora of suspects but a scattershot story. Walters muddies the waters so much that he fails to establish a cohesive narrative (Is the paranormal going to be a focus in future? or merely yet another plotline? The reader can't tell).
Fortuitously for audiobook aficionados: Greg Wagland is an incredible voice actor. His tone is occasionally flat, but his diction, timbre, and cadence are commendable.. and his interpretation of characters generates instant distinctiveness & his accents - when called for - are spot-on. This recording is praiseworthy.
Altogether, 'Late Checkout: DCI Kenny Murain Book 1' was a serviceable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons for free, but the 6/10 star audiobook isn't worth a Credit when it leaves the 'Plus' menu.
Decent "Psychic Detective" Mystery.. Sort Of
