The nation’s greatest voice, David Attenborough, reads a brand-new edition of Life on Earth, now available as an audiobook for the first time.
David Attenborough’s unforgettable meeting with gorillas became an iconic moment for millions of television viewers. Life on Earth, the series and accompanying book, fundamentally changed the way we view and interact with the natural world, setting a new benchmark of quality, influencing a generation of nature lovers. Told through an examination of animal and plant life, this is an astonishing celebration of the evolution of life on earth, with a cast of characters drawn from the whole range of organisms that have ever lived on this planet. Attenborough’s perceptive, dynamic approach to the evolution of millions of species of living organisms takes the reader on an unforgettable journey of discovery from the very first spark of life to the blue and green wonder we know today.
Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the book’s first publication, David Attenborough has revisited Life on Earth, completely updating and adding to the original text, taking account of modern scientific discoveries from around the globe. This special anniversary edition provides a fitting tribute to an enduring wildlife classic, destined to enthral the generation who saw it when first published and bring it alive for a whole new generation.
This audiobook includes wildlife sounds from BAFTA Award winning sound recordist, Chris Watson, who has worked extensively with David Attenborough on his BBC projects. We humans are the inheritors of a dynasty that has reigned over the planet for nearly 66 million years, through fiery cataclysm and ice ages: the mammals. Our lineage includes saber-toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, armadillos the size of a car, cave bears three times the weight of a grizzly, clever scurriers that outlasted Tyrannosaurus rex, and even other types of humans, like Neanderthals.

Birds. Over 9,000 species, the most widespread of all animals: on icebergs, in the Sahara or under the sea, at home in our gardens or flying for over a year at a time. Earthbound, we can only look and listen, enjoying their lightness, freedom and richness of plumage and song. David Attenborough has been watching and learning all his life. Scientists are confident that life exists elsewhere in the universe. Yet rather than taking a realistic approach to what aliens might be like, we imagine that life on other planets is the stuff of science fiction. The time has come to abandon our fantasies of space invaders and movie monsters and place our expectations on solid scientific footing. But short of alien's landing in New York City, how do we know what they are like?

A trip through evolution.
If you have ever enjoyed any of the nature documentaries narrated by David Attenborough, you will probably enjoy this. The book takes you through various families of organisms on earth. It takes you through their evolution and points out their ancestors and current day examples. David Attenborough's voice is almost the default voice for narration of nature documentaries so it naturally fits the subject matter.

No other person will so charismatically and effortlessly connect humanity to nature.
Where can one start when adequately portraying the innumerable facets which fall under the title of Sir David Frederick Attenborough? He has been the fertile soil to my germinating curiosity; the sustenance to my multi cellular replicating learning and understanding; the atmosphere and hydration to my unending love and administration to the biological, chemical and physical addiction.
I have never been underwhelmed or even the slightest bit disappointed by anything resulting from his life long journey. If I could amount to even a tenth of his total output I would not know what a regrettable life lived feels or looks like.
Thank you for every way that you have given of yourself to the only home we have Sir Attenborough.
