Good
I actually liked the story despite some reviews I’ve seen . But I wasn’t hooked enough to read the rest of the books

Interesting storyline
Good story, but not the best writing at some times. Not my favourite narrator made the main character sound quite young, and the male voices are weak.

Weak writing, interesting premise
This book is marketed as something similar to the hunger games, and it’s not at all. Whatever element of game exists feels forced, when it’s far more about politics and poor interpretation of prophesies.
The voice acting was well done and added to the story, and the world had many interesting aspects that I would have liked to see explored better with more internal consistency.
The characters are all poorly written. Isla beats you with the “I’m powerless but actually I have power cause I fight like a god” only about 100 times. The love interests are both so terrible to her, but so is she to them. She’s got a bit of that Mary Sue syndrome where magically everyone thinks she’s amazing and she is the answer to every single problem that exists and also happens to find the best ending. There’s an excessive amount of filler that just seemed like justification for bonding with the love interests (looking at you, Oro “quest”), and the protagonist refuses to listen to anyone until it’s her belief it’s the best course of action. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine that these 500 year old love interests were constantly shown up by a 20-something leader wannabe. That issue is just another symptom of the big underlying issue, which is that nothing feels earned. Plot points come out of nowhere and things jump to their furthest extremes without warning, and don’t maintain consistency. For example, Isla had an excessively cruel mentor that had her hanging from a tree branch for 5 hours, and so she has this impressive stamina that lets her surprise Oro. Yet later, she scales a wall (which, as challenging as it is, shouldn’t exhaust miss endless stamina), but it does. And it makes her weaker. She’s also a wimp for all the supposed cruel training she had to endure. Her mentor drilled it into her that she can’t show pain or cry and whatnot, and there’s a lot of situations she does, so she really didn’t internalize the lessons she was supposed to have learned.
Basically, there’s a lot of extreme things thrown in for the sake of shock value. They aren’t properly given the narrative weight needed to make them feel justified, and while there were a lot of interesting aspects that I think would make for a strong and compelling story, the level of writing doesn’t do them justice. I finished the story only because I wanted to see where this train wreck ended. Originally I was going to drop it the moment I found out it was longer than a one and done, and I certainly won’t be continuing the series, but I won’t deny that there is entertainment value. But I think there are better uses of your time.
