À propos de cet audio
From the best-selling author of Day of Infamy: In the bloodiest island combat of WWII, one group of men kept watch from behind Japanese lines.
The Solomon Islands was where the Allied war machine finally broke the Japanese empire. As pilots, marines, and sailors fought for supremacy in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and the Slot, a lonely group of radio operators occupied the Solomon Islands' highest points. Sometimes encamped in comfort, sometimes exposed to the elements, these coastwatchers kept lookout for squadrons of Japanese bombers headed for Allied positions, holding their own positions even when enemy troops swarmed all around.
They were Australian-born but Solomon-raised, and adept at survival in the unforgiving jungle environment. Through daring and insight, they stayed one step ahead of the Japanese, often sacrificing themselves to give advance warning of an attack.
In Lonely Vigil, Walter Lord, the number one New York Times best-selling author of A Night to Remember and The Miracle of Dunkirk, tells of the survivors of the campaign and what they risked to win the war in the Pacific.

Not just watchers & Spotters!
This has to be one of the most exciting listens of all my 10 yrs. with Audible! I had read Eric Feldts book on Coastwatchers back in 1979 and it stuck with me as an exciting read. Eric is acknowledged as the 'leader' of these courageous groups of men & women in Walter Lord's book as well. Not only did they keep a jump ahead of the enemy, but they took the offense, hitting them and hitting them hard. They also rescued and evacuated downed pilots & shipwrecked sailors as well. Their info helped the allied forces turn the tide in the Solomans, continually hammering the Japanese who had no idea why they were being intercepted at every turn. What an amazing cast of characters; including Priests and Nuns and some very resourceful courageous Islanders. Every chapter was exciting, and I loved Norman Dietz superb narration. If you like ACTION behind enemy lines, then this audiobook hits on all cylinders! Listening a second time as I write this review. So amazing lying in the dark with the earphones in and feeling like you are there on the various missions with them!(Because I have severe chronic pain, I listen in bed a lot, & these exciting stories are better than anything a Dr. can prescribe!) Thanks, Audible! - Ron L.
