Endearing characters with great potential let down by unimaginative writing

The books strongest aspect is the relationship between Buck and his son-in-law Paul which is charming enough to breathe some life into an otherwise overwhelmingly bland and cliche apocalypse story, The story can be fast-paced and exciting, but there is nothing much unique or interesting here.
