Irvin D. Yalom
À propos de cet audio
The collection of 10 absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter. In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too-human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist. Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.
The audio version of the book includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Yalom.

Histoire
Irvin D. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others. In this profound memoir, he turns his writing and his therapeutic eye on himself. He opens his story with a nightmare: He is 12 and is riding his bike past the home of an acne-scarred girl. Like every morning, he calls out, hoping to befriend her, "Hello Measles!" But in his dream, the girl's father makes Yalom understand that his daily greeting had hurt her. For Yalom, this was the birth of empathy; he would not forget the lesson.

Histoire
Facing memory loss at age ninety-three as well as the fallout from a global pandemic that moved much of daily life online, legendary psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom was forced to vastly reconsider the shape of his sessions with patients. Rather than throw in the towel in the face of change, Dr. Yalom considered head-on the limitations imposed by these new realities and revolutionized his practice. Turning his focus to what might be achieved in a one-hour, one-time-only meeting between patient and practitioner, Dr. Yalom employed an even more concerted use of his “here and now” approach.

Josef Breuer, one of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, is at the height of his career. Friedrich Nietzsche, Europe's greatest philosopher, is on the brink of suicidal despair, unable to find a cure for the headaches and other ailments that plague him. When he agrees to treat Nietzsche with his experimental "talking cure", Breuer never expects that he, too, will find solace in their sessions. Only through facing his own inner demons can the gifted healer begin to help his patient.

In On the Genealogy of Morals, subtitled "A Polemic", Nietzsche furthers his pursuit of a clarity that is less tainted by imposed prejudices. He looks at the way attitudes towards 'morality' evolved and the way congenital ideas of morality were heavily colored by the Judaic and Christian traditions.

This series of 28 lectures was given by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), the founder of psychoanalysis, during the First World War and first published in English in 1920. The purpose of this general introduction was to present his work and ideas - as they had matured at that point - to a general public; and even though there was to be considerable development and change over the ensuing years, these talks still offer a valuable and remarkably approachable entry point to his revolutionary concepts.

Beneficial both professionally and personally
A great and engaging story about counter-transference, meaning, and death. The author was so honest with his flaws and unflattering thoughts, sometimes to a point where I disliked him. By the end of the book though, I appreciated his vulnerability and openness and had grown a great respect for him.

I don't say this lightly; this is astounding
Everything from the fantastic narration by C.M. Carlson to the wonderful tales of a psychotherapist by Dr. Yalom blew me away. I've been listening to this book non-stop. I think I can recommend it to anyone; it's as much a collection of wisdoms and cautionary tales as it is the recounting of intimate and often touching stories of real people's lives and how they were affected by therapy. I've been using Audible for over a year and I'm finishing this book as my 8th, and so far, it is most definitely my favorite. Please, do yourself a favor. Get this thing in your ears and have a pleasant day, thank you.

Big yikes for fatphobic chapter
The chapter about a perimeter who struggled with binge eating is a hot mess. Paragraphs mocking her body and detailing the writer’s sexual preferences, encouragement for the patient to go on a prolonged liquid diet with rapid fat loss and his commentary on how she now had breast and a lap— and the happy ending is that he could get his arms all the way around her. Nightmare therapist.
