Description

Master Chef Jamie Onassis has used every penny she has to buy a beautiful country inn she plans to turn into a five-star restaurant. Unfortunately, the inn turns out to be a "handyman's special" and, without the skills or capital to make the necessary repairs, Jamie risks losing everything.

Home and garden expert Valkyrie Valentine is a rising star among the do-it-yourself set. A seemingly perfect homemaker, Valkyrie seems destined to become the next Martha Stewart - as long as no one discovers her embarrassing little secret: she can't cook.

Media mogul Sheila Thintowski is a woman on a mission. ever since meeting the dazzling, dynamic Valkyrie Valentine, she's been determined to interview her - up-close and extremely personally. Sheila suspects that Valkyrie's hands-on skills extend well beyond home improvement - and she's looking for some private lessons.

agree with consent issue

This is the second Kallmaker I have read that I was uncomfortable with the consent near the start of the physical relationship. It's too bad because I really enjoy her work when there is no dubious consent. Stepping Stones is a favourite, for example. Her work can be really sweet with deep relationships. This wasn't either, in my opinion. It wasn't bad overall, though, if a bit short to feel as fulky developed as it could have, and I really enjoyed the twist with the antagonist near the end. That was hilarious.

It just hit the trash bin.

Apparently no doesn't mean no when one woman makes aggressive advances to another. How far does the woman who doesn't want the aggressor's kiss have to run to make it clear that when she pulled away and said NO, she meant NO. In this case, she literally runs away to the closest barrier she can put between herself and the aggressor, closing herself inside the restaurant's commercial fridge. Does the aggressor stop her advance? No, she follows her target into the fridge where she corners her, and forces her to submit. In how many other contexts would this same scene -- with some changes of gender and orientation -- be viewed by a contemporary reader as a threat made by a predator. She had the right to say 'no', and she had the right for her 'no' to be respected. It's not romance if coercion is at its core. No wonder LGBTQ2S are still having such difficult conversations about sexual violence within the community. I have a lot of other issues with the novel but this scene was the actual last straw. The audiobook hit the trash bin and lost most of the stars I was getting ready to give to it. Abby Craden, the narrator, rose above the rest of what she had to work with, and did an outstanding job with the script she had.

Sweet & Romantic

This is a sweet romance with a clever homage to Christmas in Connecticut. Very enjoyable.
