À propos de cet audio

Annev has avoided one fate. But a darker path may still claim him....

After surviving the destruction of Chaenbalu, new mysteries and greater threats await Annev and his friends in the capital city of Luqura. As they navigate the city’s perilous streets, Annev searches for a way to control his nascent magic and remove the cursed artifact now fused to his body.

But what might removing it cost him?

As Annev grapples with his magic, Fyn joins forces with old enemies and new allies, waging a secret war against Luqura’s corrupt guilds in the hopes of forging his own criminal empire. Deep in the Brakewood, Myjun is learning new skills of her own as apprentice to Oyru, the shadow assassin who attacked the village of Chaenbalu - but the power of revenge comes at a daunting price. And back in Chaenbalu itself, left for dead in the Academy’s ruins, Kenton seeks salvation in the only place he can: the power hoarded in the Vault of Damnation....

Great Value!

Epic tale, great character struggles. The lesser characters could be a little more complex - they all feel flat. The author is very guilty of head-hopping (jumping from one point of view to another within the same scene) which makes many scenes very hard to follow. That said, the story is inventive and original with multiple plot lines threatening to converge at any moment. I am really looking forward to the next book!

Another great novel in this series

I am really enjoying this series thus far...and the narrator is perfect for the writing style. Both the 1st and 2nd novel in this series are anything but predictable. I am loving this adventure Justin Travis Call, with the assistance of Peter Kenny, are taking me on.

An interesting continuation

The unique story continues bringing a fresh perspective of magic to life.

Peter's narration brings each character to life, however his volume control needs to be more even as he can go to a whisper to a shout regularly.

Dark and Intense

This was a big book that went so many different directions, yet all of them were inventive and creative. All of the characters began journeys that will inevitably lead to an explosive conclusion.

Annev remained sympathetic for the most part, though as the book progressed he became more frustrated and his character arc took a dark turn. I understood it though it did change my opinion of him. It will be interesting to see where his arc goes from here, because I can imagine it will be quite dark.

Kenton uses clever schemes and thievery to begin his journey in vengeance. He becomes a significant threat and almost seemed fanatical, which will make the next part of his story intense and terrifying.

Myjin's arc is a little more complex for me. While I did find it interesting and do think it's the making of an imposing villain, it was also over-the-top in its drama and the amount of pain she endured. In theory I understood it, but I also felt it went overboard. I didn't quite connect with her character the way I wanted to, which made her chapters difficult for me to get through.

Fyn's arc was my favorite. It's exciting and fun and leaves many unanswered questions about who and what he is. I hope to see more of it.

I felt Call did a good job of balancing all the storylines with action and drama. There are a lot of moving parts, but ultimately this felt like four small books wrapped in one. The prose is easy to follow and while there are a lot of terms that require focus, it all feels natural within the book itself.

I think this is a great series for anyone who wants a long, epic dark fantasy with magic, morally grey characters, and merciless action. Check it out!

Travis Call Swings for the Fences

Huge deviation from the first book in almost every respect: this one has many POVs; this one goes very in-depth into the various magic systems (and still more to come); this one is a much bleaker tale; this one takes place in a wide variety of locations.

More is not always better but wow is it entertaining here. I was stoked initially when the magic system became very similar to Stormlight Archives, but it fairly quickly becomes a little groan worthy as the author needs to write passages like: x character used their blood magic, but it was augmented by an artifact (which was augmented further by an artifact embedded in their body). and also they might have an additional blood talent that helps all of that subconsciously too.

Some of the magic heavy scenes were well written, I think maybe the author just tries to expand out everything far too quickly. At the same time everything is getting a bit of a Wheel of Time treatment as well with all of the different factions and colluding, and prophecy. But particularly with how back half of the book Annev uses magic as well was some pretty wtf (but also amazing) imagery.

There are some new characters added in that really added some breadth to the story (Sodja), and a LOT of character growth for pretty well every student we knew from last book. I am very excited to see where this series goes, I just honestly wish I physically read this before listening on Audible as this book tries to do a lot of things, and some is just plain hard to keep track of when you only listen in 30 min spurts while driving or something.

Justin Travis Call could be the next Tolkien

If this series continues to be on par with these first two books, The Silent Gods will become as beloved and impactful as The Lord Of The Rings. This is storytelling at its best, done slowly and carefully but without a single unnecessary word. The main characters and their inner struggles are painted with a complex realism that allows the world to be fantastic and incredible. Suspension of disbelief is not merely assumed by the author, it is earned. It is like an exotic flowering plant: at the start, the bud might appear to be something familiar and common, but allow this story to bloom and you will find something incredible, vibrant, beautiful, and captivating. I eagerly await the next entry - well done!

I Literally Cannot Anymore

I just can't anymore. I got through so much of this but even thinking about listening to it again is putting me into a reading slump. This book opens just after the last book ended, but gives us a million other perspectives to read from. Generally, I don't mind that, but when we've spent so much time with Annev, it makes it hard to jump between them.

My fiance and I listened to this (and the first book) together and realized that the main issue with this is that we have had an entire book and then some and still don't know enough about Annev. He isn't nuanced or well-written, but a blank slate that you can attach any idea or personality to when the time serves you. The change from the first book to this was super drastic, which would have been fine if the characters were more than one-dimensional shams.

And don't even get me started on Kenton. The most boring person in the world and every time his POV came up I wanted to scratch my own eyes out so that I didn't have to hear about his magic ones. (I know that doesn't really work but omg was it bad).

I'm not going back to this story, this series, or this author.
