A Classic Gothic Tale

I read The Mistress of Mellyn years ago and fell in love with Victoria Holt’s storytelling. Her ability to combine mystery, romance, and gothic atmosphere is truly captivating, and this book is no exception.

That said, my tastes have changed over time, and I’ve grown less fond of first-person narration, which the story uses. While it’s effective in creating intimacy with the protagonist, I found it less engaging than I remembered.

The audiobook narrator, however, does a good job bringing the characters and setting to life.

A solid four stars for the nostalgia, the narration, and Holt’s timeless talent, even if the format isn’t my favorite anymore.
