Really enjoyed it

I read not fair criticism about narrator before listening this book. Not agree with criticism. She does pretty good job.

Hard to get past the reader

This story is not bad. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Kate Quinn’s more recent works focusing on World War II, but it was light and fluffy and should have been an easy listen. The reader however was a real distraction. Over-affected voices made characters sound unnatural and forced. I often found myself not listening to the story but instead wondering who in real life really talks like that. It made it fairly impossible to suspend my disbelief and really get into the book.

Very entertaining

Kate Quinn is an amazing author. Elizabeth Wiley is an amazing narrator.
Very entertaining. It was a page turner in terms of listening.

Excellent novel

I was riveted by the novel and read it in two days. The story is compelling, and the characters well drawn. The level of suspense is intense. The picture of the culture and lifestyle in Rome is superb.

Beautiful Story - but too much theatrics

A story I’ve loved for years, however I believe the reader’s theatrics and over acting took away from the enjoyment of the novel.

Narrator was horrible

The book was okay, the narrator was beyond horrible. One of the worst I've ever listened to, it ruined the book for me.

This is actually book 2 of the saga!! NOT book 1!!

Audible has mislabeled the saga order!!!! As per the Kate Quinn web site, as well as the chronological order of the story, book 1- daughters of Rome, book2- mistress of Rome, book3- empress of seven hills, book 3.5: the three dates, book 4:lady of the eternal city. DON'T make the mistake of listening to mistress of Rome first, then going back in time because you will already know too much of what the future holds to enjoy daughters of Rome (which is mislabeled as book 2)

Good Overall

Good story. Pacing is a tad slow but not overly so. Learned this is an abridged version, skips last paragraph of the chapters when compared to book. Bit intense in places, not for those wanting light read.

Hard to listen to the narrator.

The story didn’t capture my imagination and the narrator was hard to listen to so I gave up after seven chapters. Perhaps it gets better.
