#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Twelve years after the lights go out . . .
An epic journey to a forgotten homeland

The hotly anticipated sequel to the bestselling novel
Moon of the Crusted Snow.

In the years since a mysterious cataclysm caused a permanent blackout that toppled infrastructure and thrust the world into anarchy, Evan Whitesky has led his community in remote northern Canada off the rez and into the bush, where they’ve been rekindling their Anishinaabe traditions, isolated from the outside world. As new generations are born, and others come of age in a world after everything, Evan’s people are stronger than ever. But resources around their new settlement are drying up, and elders warn that they cannot stay indefinitely.

Evan and his teenaged daughter, Nangohns, are chosen to lead a scouting party on a months-long trip down to their traditional home on the shores of Lake Huron—to seek new beginnings, and discover what kind of life—and what danger—still exists in the lands to the south.

Waubgeshig Rice’s exhilarating return to the world first explored in Moon of the Crusted Snow is a brooding story of survival, resilience, Indigenous identity, and rebirth.

Ce que les critiques en disent

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER

“A cause for celebration. . . . Rice has created not only a compulsive narrative, but, perhaps more significantly, a compelling world, rooted in both the traditions of the Anishinaabe and the ashes of late-stage capitalism. It’s a powerful, tour de force accomplishment which will leave readers hoping for a third book.” Toronto Star

“[Moon of the Turning Leaves] smoulders with mounting tension, punctuated by flashes of shocking violence. But from the opening scene . . . Rice reminds the reader that regeneration can always follow disaster.”The Globe and Mail

“Rice’s storytelling is at its peak. . . . His prose is lovely and descriptive but readable, showing his journalistic roots.” Winnipeg Free Press

A good sequel! Spoilers clearly marked.

I very much enjoyed the Moon of the Crusted Snow. I loved the context of a post-apocalyptic book told from the perspective of a remote community that one day loses all touch with the outside world.

I was nervous about this sequel. It was much longer, and the big mistake a lot of Post-Apocalyptic tales make is to over-explain and introduce inconsistencies, remove some of the magic that makes the original great. Understanding can be satisfying, but it can take away the "spooky" enigma that makes many of these stories spine chilling.

This book introduced the event, which had some logic behind it, as well as not going into enough detail to make it "illogical". My science-minded partner was unsatisfied, but he does power generation and physics for a living.

You will like this book if:

-you enjoyed Moon of the Crusted Snow and it's characters
-you wanted to return to Evan Whitesky's world again and learn more
-you want a journey about indigenous people living off the land

you might not enjoy this book if:
-details rendering a cataclysm illogical bother you a lot
-you don't enjoy post-apocalyptic books or the tropes within
-you suffer from white fragility and need the saviors or main characters to be white
-you want to keep the alluring mystery alive from the first book
-violence and desperation of humans in dire times make you very uncomfortable

‐-----

Content Warnings (contains potential spoilers):
-Violence with mild gore descriptions
-Self Harm or suicide
-Death of "good" characters
- Women at risk of sequel violence

*********Spoilers below, proceed at own peril!*********

I loved the ending. The true "land back" dream of a thriving network of indigenous people living their ancestral lands, accepting peaceful migrants from affected areas and sickness (with skepticism), it painted a fantasy.

Though I disliked the death at the end of the story, I recognized it as an essential plot device.

Beautiful story

I loved the first book and this one followed it up wonderfully. Such rich characters and story. You can tell that the story and subject matter is is deeply personal to the author and it adds a wonderful sense of believability to the world the story takes place in.

Loved it

I am shocked at how much connection I could feel to community through a fictional novel. Miigwech for writing a book with so much care to detail and including so much Anoshnaabemowin.

engaging listen

The story was a satisfying continuation of the first novel. Well narrated. Lived learning about Annishnabe culture and exploring this post appocolyptic world. Hope it becomes a series.
