À propos de cet audio
"An indispensable resource for women of all ages, this is a guide to help us better connect to ourselves, to value ourselves, to love ourselves, and ultimately, to be ourselves." (Chelsea Clinton)
Positive body image isn’t believing your body looks good; it is knowing your body is good, regardless of how it looks.
- How do you feel about your body?
- Have you ever stayed home from a social activity or other opportunity because of concern about how you looked?
- Have you ever passed judgment on someone because of how they looked or dressed?
- Have you ever had difficulty concentrating on a task because you were self-conscious about your appearance?
Our beauty-obsessed world perpetuates the idea that happiness, health, and ability to be loved are dependent on how we look, but authors Lindsay and Lexie Kite offer an alternative vision. With insights drawn from their extensive body image research, Lindsay and Lexie—PhDs and founders of the nonprofit Beauty Redefined (and also twin sisters!)—lay out an action plan that arms you with the skills you need to reconnect with your whole self and free yourself from the constraints of self-objectification.
From media consumption to health and fitness to self-reflection and self-compassion, Lindsay and Lexie share powerful and practical advice that goes beyond “body positivity” to help listeners develop body image resilience—all while cutting through the empty promises sold by media, advertisers, and the beauty and weight-loss industries. In the process, they show how facing your feelings of body shame or embarrassment can become a catalyst for personal growth.

Elinor Cleghorn became an unwell woman 10 years ago. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease after a long period of being told her symptoms were anything from psychosomatic to a possible pregnancy. As Elinor learned to live with her unpredictable disease, she turned to history for answers, and found an enraging legacy of suffering, mystification, and misdiagnosis. In Unwell Women, Elinor Cleghorn traces the almost unbelievable history of how medicine has failed women by treating their bodies as alien and other, often to perilous effect.

Systemic Shame is the socially engineered self-loathing that says we are solely to blame for our circumstances. It teaches that our consumption is moral and personal choice is our only tool of change. Systemic Shame tells us that poverty is remedied by hard-working people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, that marginalized people are responsible for their own oppression, and that massive global crises like climate change can be solved by switching to paper straws. When we inevitably blame ourselves for failing to do enough to combat structural injustices, we feel Systemic Shame.

Food Isn't Medicine wades through nutritional science (both good and bad) to demystify the common diet myths that many of us believe without questioning. If you have ever wondered whether you should stop eating sugar, try fasting, juicing or 'alkaline water', or struggled through diet after diet (none of which seem to work), this book will be a powerful wake-up call.

Sixty-eight percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90 percent of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66 percent of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it? The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.

It's comforting to imagine that superstars in their fields were just born better equipped than the rest of us. When a co-worker loses 20 pounds, or a friend runs a marathon while completing a huge project at work, we assume they have more grit, more willpower, more innate talent, and above all, more motivation to see their goals through. But that's not at actually true, as popular Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden proves. "Motivation" as we know it is a myth. Motivation isn't the special sauce that we require at the beginning of any major change.

Really important work that every woman should read
Men should read it too of course to get a glimmer of understanding of how body objectification has harmed women. But every woman needs this to try to break free from the culture we are surrounded by so that she can actually live her life. The things discussed are so invisible, so pervasive, and so damaging, you will definitely learn something from these two PhDs!

Enlightening
This really opened my eyes about life. I could relate to all the aspect of objectification I have struggled with since I was still a teenager and how it has shaped my life. This book brings real solutions on how to deal with that for me. I think every woman, and men as well, should read it. A big thumb up to the authors, really.

Most impactful book I have ever read
This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the pervasive self worth issues that seem to plague women and girls these days. Lifted a huge weight off my shoulders knowing I can opt out of this deadly game that leaves no winners, only losers. I am more than my body; self objectification no more. Life changing for me and hopefully my children as well.

If you struggle with your body image, read this.
I think this book should be read by every woman. I have been doing body image work for years now, and have come a long way, but I was still blown away by this book. I am realizing how much of the objectification I’ve experienced has been self-objectification. I still have a lot to learn, but this book has given me a lot to think about, and some concrete actions to take.
