À propos de cet audio

Bloomsbury presents Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa, read by Suzanne Toren.

A heart-wrenching, powerfully written novel: a Kite Runner for Palestine

‘One of the most thought-provoking books I've read ... written with passion and honesty, and poetry' Daily Mail

Mornings in Jenin is a devastating novel of love and loss, war and oppression, and heartbreak and hope, spanning five countries and four generations of one of the most intractable conflicts of our lifetime.

Palestine, 1948. Half a million Palestinians are forced from their homes. A mother clutches her six-month-old son as Israeli soldiers march through the village of Ein Hod. In a split second, her son is snatched from her arms and the fate of the Abulheja family is changed forever.

Forced into a refugee camp in Jenin and exiled from the ancient village that is their lifeblood, the family struggles to rebuild their world. Their stories unfold through the eyes of the youngest sibling, Amal, the daughter born in the camp who will eventually find herself alone in the United States; the eldest son who loses everything in the struggle for freedom; the stolen son who grows up as an Israeli, becoming an enemy soldier to his own brother.

‘The writer's pain – and the beauty of her prose – are very real' Telegraph

Great writer. Great, tragic story. Great Reader

I love the writing of Susan Abulhawa. I have read this book twice and listened to it once. I have read her other books as well. Abulhawa gives a compelling view of the history of the Palestinian people living for years in Refugee Camps. The reader is very good. I recommend this book and audio book very highly.

An Incredibly Moving Story

Great characterization and an ability to make the story come alive. I was weeping throughout the latter half of the book.

An incredible eye opening experience

[Context: I am a 20 something year old white Canadian who was raised Roman Catholic but no longer claim any religion]

This book not only opened my eyes, but also my heart to the unjust plight of the Palestinian people. I had to keep reminding myself that this is historical fiction, and that this is not the horrifying tale of one family. However, I do recognize that many families may have actually experienced all these events, but it is my deepest wish that non have.

Susan Abulhawa masterfully keeps you bound to her lines, and never misses the opportunity to tug on your heart strings. She plays them like a maestro plays a harp. Although just words on a page the stories she tells surpass nationality, religion, culture and preconceptions, affecting all those who read/hear them.

At no point did I regret listening to this audiobook, for not only does Susan Abulhawa write masterfully, but Suzanne Toren does a perfect job of bringing the book to life. It's not often it feels like I'm listening to the character, but under her sweet voice it is impossible not to hear the impressively strong women in the book.

I can't help recommend this book enough!

To be honest I didn't even know there was a conflict in Palestine until a few years ago. I had known that Israel was formed following the horrific events of the Holocaust, and had been told that since it's inception the neighbouring nations had tried to absolve it. When asked by two people dear to me, who are Afghani, what my thoughts on Israel were I responded: "I don't know that I have an opinion." It is through one of those two that I listened to this book.

Amazing book

It took my a long time to get through this book because the content is heavy. these stories might be fiction but they're based on true events that very similar stories occurred.
