À propos de cet audio

August, 1940. On the streets of London, locals watch with growing concern as German fighter planes plague the city’s skyline. But inside the famous Ritz Hotel, the cream of society continues to enjoy all the glamour and comfort that money can buy during wartime - until an anonymous man is discovered with his throat slashed open.

Detective Chief Inspector Coburg is called in to investigate, ably assisted by his trusty colleague, Sergeant Lampson. With the crime committed in rooms in use by an exiled king and his retinue, there are those who fear diplomatic repercussions and would rather the case be forgotten. Coburg and Lampson must untangle a web of deception if they are to solve the case - and survive.

Because of the title and cover, I expected a Poirot-like cozy British mystery in a fancy hotel with war in the background. However, this is more of a war story with the policing of gang wars and political murder in the background. Several scenes caught me off-guard with unexpectedly brutal descriptions of bombings as well as the sadness of grief, loss and PTSD.

This is a very interesting story. The narrator does a great job, the characters are fully developed (the sergeant is particularly likeable and the DI is okay for someone who comes from privilege) and I definitely want to hear more of their adventures. But next time I will wait to be in the right mood!

I wish it had come with trigger warnings
