Emily Ratajkowski
À propos de cet audio
A deeply honest investigation of what it means to be a woman and a commodity from Emily Ratajkowski, the archetypal, multi-hyphenate celebrity of our time.
Emily Ratajkowski is an acclaimed model and actress, an engaged political progressive, a formidable entrepreneur, a global social media phenomenon, and now, a writer. Rocketing to world fame at age 21, Ratajkowski sparked both praise and furor with the provocative display of her body as an unapologetic statement of feminist empowerment. The subsequent evolution in her thinking about our culture’s commodification of women is the subject of this book.
My Body is a profoundly personal exploration of feminism, sexuality, and power, of men's treatment of women and women's rationalizations for accepting that treatment. These essays chronicle moments from Ratajkowski’s life while investigating the culture’s fetishization of girls and female beauty, its obsession with and contempt for women’s sexuality, the perverse dynamics of the fashion and film industries, and the grey area between consent and abuse.
Nuanced, unflinching, and incisive, My Body marks the debut of a fierce writer brimming with courage and intelligence.

Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow, and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media, where she entertains and educates her millions of followers. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself. This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. With writing that is both eloquent and accessible, Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy.

Histoire
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Loved it!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Emily read her story. It felt like a conversation with an old friend - incredibly relatable & filled with honest truths about what it means to be a woman in our time. We are the same age & I felt this would resonate deeply with any woman from this generation.

Vulnerability
Pleasantly surprised by this. Ratajkowski has been in the public eye since I was a middle schooler but I believe this is the only time we’ve really seen her.
Her thoughts surrounding feminism, the objectification of women and desirability are so articulate yet relatable to women despite not having the lived experiences of a famous model. In the chapter, “Men Like You,” Ratajkowski gets choked up while narrating her words and so do I while listening - that vulnerability from an author shows how personal these essays are to her and I truly valued + felt connected to her perspectives.

Brilliant
My favourite book this year. It’s deceptively simple, but she captures the true complexity of women and the function of their appearance so brilliantly. She’s such an incredibly keen observer of how commonplace the commodification of women is.
And she does this all in such a compelling and “can’t put the book down” kind of way!
Really looking forward to reading more from this author (and hopefully longer, I could listen to her for many more hours).

Described so well what women go through
I’ll be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got the book. The book was so well written from start to finish and it described so many things I went through as a woman as well, it’s nice to know that we are not alone in our perception of how differently women experience this world. Emily articulated it in such a raw and real way and it inspired me to keep going too despite also having experiences like that with men.

Too short.
It was too good which meant I finished it too quickly and got the end-of-an-amazing-book-sads earlier. That's my only complain.
Emily is a fantastic writer and lovely reader, and the healing power of her words cannot be understated. Her experiences are intriguing and delivered with a backbone of universal truth that will leave many women feeling seen, and maybe reverse some of the trauma by a thousand cuts we experience under our current values system.
Bravo, and thank you Emily for your vulnerability and bravery.
