À propos de cet audio

This book provides a concise, accurate, and lively portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte's character and career, situating him firmly in historical context.

David Bell emphasizes the astonishing sense of human possibility - for both good and ill - that Napoleon represented. By his late 20s, Napoleon was already one of the greatest generals in European history. At 30, he had become absolute master of Europe's most powerful country. In his early 40s, he ruled a European empire more powerful than any since Rome, fighting wars that changed the shape of the continent and brought death to millions. Then everything collapsed, leading him to spend his last years in miserable exile in the South Atlantic.

Bell emphasizes the importance of the French Revolution in understanding Napoleon's career. The revolution made possible the unprecedented concentration of political authority that Napoleon accrued and his success in mobilizing human and material resources. Without the political changes brought about by the revolution, Napoleon could not have fought his wars. Without the wars, he could not have seized and held onto power. Though his virtual dictatorship betrayed the ideals of liberty and equality, his life and career were revolutionary.

Concise!

Pretty good entry I to the history of Napoleon. A little more description of the battles would be nice.

Acceptable Summary

Harvard/Princeton Professor of History David A. Bell offers a serviceable review of the life & times of twice French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The stated goal is to offer a concise College-level treatise - consumable for a general audience (pretty much exactly what I was looking for).
Unfortunately, the result is variable. Bell hits the major points and avoids the temptation to resort to a dry recitation of names & dates (the book is informative and readable) - but also occasionally goes off topic and does a poor job making the book sound authentic (it's obviously the author's - admittedly considered - opinion that we're reading).

Reader Paul Heitsch doesn't help the situation with an "average" narration, either. Don't get me wrong.. his diction, timbre, and cadence are beyond reproach - and his tone remains remarkably interested throughout - but his French accents (while respectable) belie an evident unfamiliarity with the language. Tantor Audio Inc. did well to cast an obviously professional reader.. but could have found someone who speaks French.

Altogether, 'Napoleon' is moderately disappointing. It still rates a respectable 6.5 stars out of 10, mind you.. but if it leaves the 'Plus' catalog, you should save the Credit for something else.
