À propos de cet audio
Homicide detective Hoke Moseley is called to a posh Miami neighborhood to investigate a lethal overdose. There he meets the alluring stepmother of the decedent and begins to wonder about dating a witness. Meanwhile, he has been threatened with suspension by his ambitious new chief unless he leaves his beloved, if squalid, suite at the Eldorado Hotel and moves downtown. With free housing hard to come by, Hoke is desperate to find a new place to live. His difficulties are only amplified by an assignment to reinvestigate fifty unsolved murders, the unexpected arrival of his two teenage daughters, and a partner struggling with an unwanted pregnancy. With few options, and even fewer dollars, he decides that the suspicious and beautiful stepmother of the dead junkie might be a compromised solution to all of his problems.
Packed with atmosphere and humor, New Hope for the Dead is a classic murder mystery by one of the true masters of the genre. Charles Willeford's tour de force is an irresistible invitation to become acquainted with one of the greatest detective characters of all time.

If you like Tarantino Films..
That odd combination of violence, gritty realism, and dark humor is captivating. Charles Willeford's 'Hoke Mosely' novels remind me of stories like 'Pulp Fiction', 'Django Unchained', and 'Inglorious Basterds'.. incorporating shocking brutality while still prompting (sometimes uncomfortable) chuckles.
In this one, the surly Miami PD Homicide Detective juggles the active murder of a drug mule, an assigned slate of Fifty cold cases, office politics, estranged daughters moving in, and a moody pregnant partner. The pacing is a little awkward, but Willeford writes intriguing characters, realistic sardonic dialogue, and unparalleled mind's-eye description.
The production quality is similarly excellent. Reader Stephen Bowlby demonstrates exemplary diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting.. but - best of all - injects a spot-on deadpan tone that matches Willeford's intent perfectly.
Altogether, I thoroughly enjoyed this 8/10 star recording. The first novel ('Miami Blues') was more tongue-in-cheek (and hence more fun), but this one has enough grit & laugh-out-loud dialogue to provide pretty much exactly what Quentin Tarantino says reader/listeners should expect.
Even if Audible asks for a Credit (I got this book as a 'Plus' option), 'New Hope For The Dead' is worth it. Enjoy.
[Incidentally: this book has the most hilarious "Birds & Bees" talk between dad and daughters in literary history]
