Description

For fans of Stephen King, Mark Edwards and The Haunting of Hill House comes a dark tale of a mysterious house haunted by tragedy.

The Nightingale House is a new beginning for widower Daniel Price and his young daughter Caitlyn. After months of grief, this will be the place where they start their life as a family of two.

But something is wrong—Daniel can’t settle. There’s an odd, cold feeling in the master bedroom, and a mysterious dripping noise that seems to move from room to room. Whispers of I can’t sleep echo through the corridors, long into the night.

And then Daniel uncovers the chilling story of the family who lived in the house years before, of betrayal, tragedy, and murder. Could the Nightingale House be not the home Daniel dreamed of for his daughter—but a place that will bring their worst nightmares to life?

awesome

This was a wonderful book. It was my second book by this author. He has become an auto buy for me.

nice

Now this is my kind of ghost story. I love horror with a happy ending.
In fairness, this isn't exactly horror. More "rumination on grief" It was quite good. Yeah, I have a few quibbles (some of the early interactions between the protagonist and his wife made me cringe, but that's a reader issue, not a writer issue) but overall, this was a nice, satisfying listen. The protagonists were relatable. Even the kid wasn't that bad! And the next-door neighbour was a delight. It was easy to get invested in their outcomes, and it was a relief when it didn't turn into a Shining situation.
The scenes in the past were all too realistic and consequently, very uncomfortable. The past protagonist, Rebecca, was kind of awful, at first, but she evolved and I was so relieved when she made it out alive.
Past and present storylines came together neatly. The ending was satisfying and sweet.

Ok, so, the other gripe. Good grief, the narrator was dreadful. His inflection rose at the end of nearly every sentence. He cadence was scoopy. It was really hard to listen to. And wow, his female voices. It was rough. I eventually sort of got used to it, but it was a trial.

Just ok

I loved this author's book called The Hallows so much so that I instantly purchased this book with the hopes that it would be just as or even better but I was disappointed.
The narrator's voice was good but the story line was slow with not much build up for suspense or spookiness. There were many moments where I just wanted to speed through parts of the story. The ending was quick and the most action was the last 2 or 3 chapters.
Hoping if he has other books that they are better then this one!
