Over two decades, Rick Perlstein has published three definitive works about the emerging dominance of conservatism in modern American politics. With the saga's final installment, he has delivered yet another stunning literary and historical achievement. In late 1976, Ronald Reagan was dismissed as a man without a political future: defeated in his nomination bid against a sitting president of his own party, blamed for President Gerald Ford's defeat, too old to make another run.

In January of 1973 Richard Nixon announced the end of the Vietnam War and prepared for a triumphant second term - until televised Watergate hearings revealed his White House as little better than a mafia den. The next president declared upon Nixon’s resignation “our long national nightmare is over” - but then congressional investigators exposed the CIA for assassinating foreign leaders. The collapse of the South Vietnamese government rendered moot the sacrifice of some 58,000 American lives.

Histoire
Acclaimed historian Rick Perlstein chronicles the rise of the conservative movement in the liberal 1960s. At the heart of the story is Barry Goldwater, the renegade Republican from Arizona who loathed federal government, despised liberals, and mocked "peaceful coexistence" with the USSR. Perlstein's narrative shines a light on a whole world of conservatives and their antagonists, including William F. Buckley, Nelson Rockefeller, and Bill Moyers. Vividly written, Before the Storm is an essential book about the 1960s.

Histoire
In 1965, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the 20th century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful.

Dance of the Knights (Franklins and Orthogonians)
Loved the book, though I am a long follower of the crooked ways of Richard Milhous Nixon. I appreciated Perlman's commitment to also telling the story of the left, and twists and turns following Chicago 68.
Particularly for those who think of Nixon solely through the lens of Watergate, this is a useful corrective to show why he was someone at the centre of American politics for over a quarter century. Orthogonians continue to be a useful foil for the Franklin elite, and a powerful tool for understanding current populist appeals. Hence the reference to Prokiev's Romeo and Juliet.
A very good story, well told.

A good history on the conservatism of the early 60
Another book that helps understand the man, Richard Nixon, and the so called turbulent 60s. Actually, the 60s were not as turbulent as they were manifestations of America itself - a divided nation. This has always been the case since the founding of the nation, and for better or worse, this will continue into the future.

The Vietnam anti-war movement and Nixon
Lots and lots of stuff that I didn't know, even though I was in my 20s during Nixon's time as president. This has to be the definitive book on the anti-war movement and the author manages to keep up the interest even though the book is wicked long. I had no complaints about the narrator's pronunciation (sway-do for pseudo is kinda cute!). When you are used to someone spending a whole book mispronouncing Beijing, you can adapt to anything.

A measterpiece
Reaganland was a brilliant, incisive study and this is as well. It's long but it never drags.

Not a great title for audio
The book sounds like someone reading random headlines from a newspaper with some minor explanations thrown in occasionally. Maybe it’s better on paper. The Graf book on Watergate is way better.
