Description

When Laura McAllister, a young lady's maid, learns her three siblings have been taken from their mother and emigrated to Canada without her mother's knowledge, she becomes determined to search for them and reunite the family. But a lack of funds and resistance from authorities push her to use a false name and take a position with a child emigration society to gain passage to Canada.

Andrew Frasier, a wealthy young lawyer, is surprised to see his mother's former maid on board a ship escorting a group of child immigrants, especially when she uses a different name. He's even more surprised when he learns that she's tracking down her siblings and attempting to save the other children from a horrendous fate. Romantic feelings grow between this unlikely couple, and even though they have different backgrounds, they share a growing faith and a desire to seek justice and relief for the children who are being mistreated.

A Journey Worth Hearing

I enjoy reading books about historical England and the plight of women and children. This book sites the McAllister children’s journey as they are send to Canada with many other British Home Children. This is a much gentler read than many other books in how the treatment of the children and how they and women were treated as property. The McAllister children are sweet kids and have a faith in God. I am looking forward to reading the sequel of this one family’s difficult journey to be reunited.

History lesson come to life

I love this book for what I learned about the historical moving of children from England to Canada. It was a nail biter as we went from one problem to another. The ending left me hanging and anxious to read the sequel.

Touching Story

This was a great story, revealing much about the plight of the British Home Children and one family's search for siblings mistakenly sent to Canada. While I enjoyed the story and found it well written I found it predictable in every way. As well, I was thoroughly fed up with hearing "Oh Lord...." over and over again. we realize from early on that it has Christian overtones but it was so overdone i nearly didnt finish the book. likewise with the "thank yous" and over abundance if gratitude felt by everyone, sll the time. somehow it didn't all ring quite true and to me it distracted from the heart of the story and the truth of what BHC experienced. I would have liked to hear the results of the report and what was or wasn't resolved because of it and we bever know what happens to Grace, which leaves someting unfinished for me.
