In 1848, a year of international democratic revolt, a young, enslaved couple, Ellen and William Craft, achieved one of the boldest feats of self-emancipation in American history. Posing as master and slave, while sustained by their love as husband and wife, they made their escape together across more than 1,000 miles, riding out in the open on steamboats, carriages, and trains that took them from bondage in Georgia to the free states of the North.

Strong story
The characters are interesting. The story flows two families for multiple years as they navigate the politics leading up to the American Civil War. There's a grittiness to the characters, particularly Ashton. This book is not for those who dislike authors who head hop. Excellent narration.

Not what I Expected, Yet Ended Up Even Better!
So, I thoight this was a romance story sort of like Pride & Predudice. At first I was sad that the story wasn't going the way I expected, but out of nowhere I got swept into a sweeping saga of two families. I have eaten up the first two books and can listen to the story for 12hrs a day without getting bored. It's not a romance, it's a gritty, eye opening story about families, friends and the ties that bind them regardless of political views. I highly recommend it! There is love, adventure, heartbreak and happiness in this amazing 45 hr story.
