À propos de cet audio
Brought to you by Penguin.
The long-awaited autobiography from beloved star of Just a Minute, QI, Have I Got News For You and Celebrity Gogglebox.
There are few people Gyles Brandreth doesn't know or hasn't met - from the queen to the Sex Pistols, Mandela and Marlene Dietrich to T. S. Eliot, he's the celebrities' celebrity, as familiar and welcome to us on radio and screens as biscuits are to a cup of tea.
Now a grandparent, looking back on his remarkable life, he traces his steps back to being a three-year-old tearing around 1950s London on his tricycle, to boarding school where he had an appendix removed simply to get out of football, to Bedales, where he met Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (and became intimate with a matron), to balancing his growing love of theatre with his love for educating, the 'woolly jumper years', the stint as an MP, the years of close friendship with the queen, to becoming a septuagenarian Twitter star and stalwart fixture in British entertainment.
Throughout it all, there are lessons to be learned as Gyles derives wisdom and wit from his extraordinary encounters. Full of stories and full of heart, this is Gyles as you don't yet know him.

Retrospective on life of a Raconteur
I enjoyed this book, his story is both interesting and moving. There is more depth to this man than I ever thought possible from watching his career over the years. Loads of interesting stories about stars of stage and screen plus politicians and of course his family.

Blabbermouth
I had high hopes that I would like this man, but alas I found him the most smug, self-satisfied egotistical person that he has always appeared to be. Under the guise of “ this is all for you Father”, it was a free pass to say everything he can think of to seem important, liberated, open-minded and experienced. He thinks his father ( who died many years ago) would want to hear all of his exploits and be happy that he dropped and damaged Yehudi’s strad, and dripped coffee on Oscar Wilde’s original manuscript …. This man has gaul. He says very very private things about people, without care to who might not want to hear it, who may be damaged from it. It’s all about Gyles. He’s happy to exploit and also tell us too many things we really don’t want to know. One chapter upset me so much, even hearing the first few words and skipping the chapter, has left me with images I can’t forgive him for. Gyles, you have said it all, you’ve said too much. If your father is listening, I hope he used an editor because if I were his dad, I’d be upset that I created such a selfish man. I’m glad he feels happy with his life, but I’m not.
