À propos de cet audio

Nearing the end of a suspended jail sentence should unlock a brighter future for CJ Davis, only the chip on his shoulder is as hard to shift as his bad reputation. Born into a family of career criminals who live down Davis Road, an address the cops have dubbed Davis Row, his name alone is like a rap sheet that makes optimism impossible.

Brand-new parole officer Noah Huxley is determined to see the good in men like CJ. After all, he knows firsthand that bad things can happen to good people. His colleagues mock his doe-eyed optimism, but Noah soon sees CJ's bad attitude and bravado are weapons he uses to keep people at a distance.

Both men know one simple mistake can change a life forever. At first glance, they might seem to be polar opposites. Yet underneath, they're not that different at all.

Contains mature themes.

Being given a chance and making your way in the world

4.25/5 This was an emotional read. I empathised a lot with CJ and his life situation. He received so little support and had so few opportunities. The chip on his shoulder is huge, but it’s understandable. His dad made me super uncomfortable, and the situation CJ and Pops are stuck in when his dad is out is truly awful.

Noah is so determined to give people chances, and it’s nice to see his positive efforts having positive rewards. I admire his taking something terrible happening and making something good out of it. I liked the way Noah just kept trying with CJ, and how CJ slowly responded to that. I don’t know a lot about illiteracy, and it was neat to see the supports that are there to help overcome some of the barriers—once you know you can ask for them.

I really liked Noah and CJ together, but I very much appreciated the (mostly) professional distance they kept between them while Noah was CJ’s parole officer. The connection was undeniable, but acting on it with so much power imbalance was very problematic, so I liked that they mostly toed the line.

I liked seeing the two of them work together for a common goal (and never leaving Pops behind). It’s great for them personally, but professionally, it also makes me think about how the system *should* work, and all the ways we can better support people.

Noah’s reaction to learning more about CJ’s past really annoyed me (especially that late into their relationship), so I was really glad when CJ called him and on it, and it got sorted out pretty quickly. Otherwise, Noah’s support was always 100%, and it’s so clear how much that means to Noah, who’s never had anyone but Pops think he’s worthwhile before.

I appreciated the epilogue for a glimpse of the revitalised town and more people getting more chances. Noah, CJ, and Pops deserve the best HEA.

Quite enjoyed this one.

Joel Leslie did a good job narrating this one. I got quite invested in the story and just wanted CJ to succeed!

Love their story

Never assume you know someone by what’s written on paper. You don’t know their story or their heart.

CJ carries the weight of a family that has struggled in and out of the law. He’s 24, on parole trying to make a go at life. Caring for himself and his grandfather as best he can.

What his life didn’t forsee was Noah. Brand new to his job as a parole officer and he has the optimism to prove it. He believes he can make a difference. And I love him for it.

CJ is Noah’s first case. It was never going to be a smooth meeting. CJ has been around the block and has seen it all before. He’s used to people writing him off because he’s a Davis. But he’s never come against the likes of Noah. He’s as stubborn as he is caring.

But slowly a friendship is formed. Which turns into so much more.

I loved everything about this. The push and pull, the growth and understanding. The tender moments. And the fierce love that comes from it all.

If you love audiobooks, be sure to check it out. Joel Leslie does a fantastic job with the material and the characters.
