À propos de cet audio
Richard Freiherr von Rosen was a highly decorated Wehrmacht soldier and outstanding panzer commander. After serving as a gunlayer on a Pz.Mk.III during Barbarossa, he led a company of Tigers at Kursk. Later he led a company of King Tiger panzers at Normandy and in late 1944 commanded a battle group (12 King Tigers and a flak company) against the Russians in Hungary in the rank of junior, later senior lieutenant (from November 1944, his final rank). Only 489 of these King Tiger tanks were ever built. They were the most powerful heavy tanks to see service, and only one kind of shell could penetrate their armor at a reasonable distance. Every effort had to be made to retrieve any of them bogged down or otherwise immobilized, which led to many towing adventures.
The author has a fine memory and eye for detail. His account is easy to listen to and not technical, and adds substantially to the knowledge of how the German Panzer Arm operated in the Second World War.

When Guy Sajer joins the infantry full of ideals in the summer of 1942, the German army is enjoying unparalleled success in Russia. However, he quickly finds that for the foot soldier the glory of military success hides a much harsher reality of hunger, fatigue, and constant deprivation. Posted to the elite Grosse Deutschland division, he enters a violent and remorseless world where all youthful hope is gradually ground down, and all that matters is the brute will to survive.

Gunter K. Koschorrek was a machine-gunner on the Russian front in WWII. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave. The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow.

While the Battle of Kursk has long captivated World War II aficionados, it has been unjustly overlooked by historians. Drawing on the masses of new information made available by the opening of the Russian military archives, Dennis E. Showalter at last corrects that error. This battle was the critical turning point on World War II's Eastern Front. In the aftermath of the Red Army's brutal repulse of the Germans at Stalingrad, the stakes could not have been higher.

The author could be described as a veteran in every sense of the word, even though he was only age 21 when the war ended. Armin Scheiderbauer served as an infantry officer with the 252nd Infantry Division, German army, and saw four years of bitter combat on the Eastern Front, being wounded six times. This is an outstanding personal memoir, written with great thoughtfulness and honesty.

Unique, and rarely heard account of events
It’s not often this view point is heard. And being that so few Panzer commanders wrote books this is a very interesting listen. 10/10

Really enjoyed it, highly reccomend
I’ve been reading a lot of books from the German perspective of WWII and this is one of my favourites. His perspective was honest and his story was gripping. I was also surprised to learn he’s in some famous footage of Tiger tanks and now when I see him in documentaries I feel like he’s an old friend. I would highly recommend it.

Sporadic action
The foreword was accurate in that this memoirist's experience in war was sporadic. Intense, but sporadic. the point of view is new for me, but the stories lacked some more intimate detail that I look for. A good read, at least for free.

Sumblime historic narrative of tank warfare
Always wanted to see the german history WW2 from a purely millitary perspective. This book provided it. The fact the author survided the war and was able to share his story makes it worth the read.

Seeing World War III through a German’s eyes
This is a well told story. I know plenty about World War II. I just don’t know how the German soldiers saw it. This is a great book if you want to see the perspective from the other side.

Good but not Great
The authors story is very interesting but I feel he keeps his emotions too much in check. Possibly for self preservation so this is an observation not a criticism. He was a very brave and from what he says an honorable man and soldier.
Some more detail.on the actual tank combat would have been good. overall a good book for the amateur military historian and worth listening too.
