À propos de cet audio

"Of Man's First Disobedience, and the Fruit
Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal taste
Brought Death into the World, and all our woe...."

So begins the greatest epic poem in the English language. In words remarkable for their richness of rhythm and imagery, Milton tells the story of man's creation, fall, and redemption, "to justify the ways of God to men". Here, unabridged, and told with exceptional sensitivity and power by Anton Lesser, is the plight of Adam and Eve, the ambition and vengefulness of Satan and his cohorts.

Anton Lesser is a trained Shakespearean actor – and it shows. Paradise Lost is a notoriously difficult text to read aloud; the grammar is unorthodox, the cadence is demanding, the neologisms are many. But Lesser artfully delivers each line and sentence with the power of someone who knows this early modern text well. I hardly expected that any single reader could do Milton's poem justice, but this did it. I will be recommending it to my students and colleagues.

For those hoping to read Paradise Lost for the first time, know that the challenge is part of the beauty. It helps to read or hear a summary of each Book (really almost like a chapter) before diving in; the "Argument" at the beginning of each book is such a summary, but modern readers not used to 17th-century English might appreciate a quick modern summary in addition. Happy listening.

Masterful recitation of an astonishing poem
