À propos de cet audio

On a remote Highland mountain, the body of Elaine Buxton is burning. All that will be left to identify the respected lawyer are her teeth and a fragment of clothing.

In the concealed back room of a house in Edinburgh, the real Elaine Buxton screams into the darkness…

Detective Inspector Luc Callanach has barely set foot in his new office when Elaine’s missing persons case is escalated to a murder investigation. Having left behind a promising career at Interpol, he’s eager to prove himself to his new team. But Edinburgh, he discovers, is a long way from Lyon, and Elaine’s killer has covered his tracks with meticulous care.

It’s not long before another successful woman is abducted from her doorstep, and Callanach finds himself in a race against the clock. Or so he believes … The real fate of the women will prove more twisted than he could have ever imagined.

Fans of Angela Marson, Mark Billingham and M. J. Aldridge will be gripped by this chilling journey into the mind of a troubled killer.

Fantastic story and talented author

This is the first book of Helen Fields. I love it so much but I didn’t give 5 stars because it’s quite long. Very meticulous to depict the killer and the progress. I do enjoy it but quite long. I expect to read the second book.

Gripping from the start!

An excellent read, great character evolution and very descriptive. I’m all ready to start book 2 of this series! Loved the Scottish setting and makes me want to revisit just to get to know the characters better! The narration made the book come alive! Well done!

Excellent!

I couldn’t stop listening. The story was so well written and the narrator was perfect with the accents, tones and intonations that made each character come to life. So looking forward to the rest of the DI Callanach series.

Generally an excellent, suspenseful storyline with intriguing characters, but…

…the references to Catholicism display an atrocious bias against the Church. Fields’ portrayal of nuns who run a home for young unwed mothers and her characters’ comments about Catholic teachings on sexuality, demonstrate either an irrational aversion to the Catholic Church which manifests itself in characterizations out of a 19th century anti-Catholic tract, or a profound lack of knowledge about Catholicism in the 21st century, or possibly both. Nuns with canes who rant on about pregnant teenagers going to hell, beating them even as they go into labour are so far removed from reality that these descriptions deserve nothing but ridicule, seeming to illustrate that the Orangeman loathing for Catholicism still runs deep in parts of Scotland. I don’t know if Fields is Protestant or one of those self-loathing Catholics who actually knows very little about the faith she was raised in, but the egregious display of prejudice against the world’s largest Christian faith proved to me that although the author can spin a great tale, she’s not much of a researcher. If she was, she’d know that priests and nuns rarely, if ever speak about hellfire, and that those who assist unwed mothers do so out of compassion for these girls, along with a dedication to the sanctity of all human life — not for the reason the author proposes in Perfect Remains — to prevent the girls from being damned to hell. It would be laughable if it wasn’t presented with such seriousness. And the bit about a letter of complaint from the Vatican (what a joke, that would NEVER happen!), and about Catholics in Scotland being all up in arms about a detective’s anti-Catholic rant during a press conference, are beyond ridiculous when in reality at least half of today’s Catholics are poorly catechized and would actually tend to agree with the officer’s characterization of their faith’s moral teachings being cruel and terribly out of date.

It’s really a shame the author felt compelled to include this anti-Catholic narrative in a murder mystery that I was really enjoying. I imagine this secondary storyline would never have made it past the editors if it was about Orthodox Jews or strict Muslims. Apparently Catholics are still fair game in Scotland.

On a positive note, the book’s narrator is outstanding, managing to slip easily in and out of a variety of accents, and bringing the characters’ personalities to life with superb vocal acting. Robin Laing is one of the most impressive narrators I’ve come across and I’ve listened to hundreds of audio books.

Very scary and graphic story

Far too many plots and barbaric acts to rate it higher than a two.
The narrator did an excellent job with multiple characters and a French accent
