Faced with the aftermath of a life-altering decision, a 9-year-old boy seeks solace in the Kentucky forest in pursuit of happiness, love, and acceptance.
After a lifetime of abuse, 9-year-old Rusty Travis and his older brother, Bo, decide their father must be stopped when, in a drunken rage, he goes after their 6-year-old sister. After their vengeance is complete, they seek refuge in the tall oak forest where they stumble upon a mysterious runaway orphan. This leads to uncovering secrets about themselves and their family they never imagined leading Rusty to question everything he thought he knew. With his brother by his side, they battle with the demons that shatter their world in the sleepy town of Plum Springs.

The blurb made me think it would be a King style supernatural bildungsroman. It wasn't. I'm not mad about it.
This was a raw portrait of neglect and abuse, but it was most assuredly not misery-lit. It wasn't exploitative. It almost felt like a child's adventure story, but with substance abuse, spousal abuse, child abuse, murder, and a family tree that's more of a wreath.
The characters were particularly well written. You couldn't help but root hard for the kids. The tension was palpable and did not let up. The danger felt really, really real.
It was a good book. One that I won't want to listen to again, because the themes were so grim, but I liked it and I'm glad I took a chance on it.
