Repeating positive affirmations can transform automatic thoughts over time, leading to increased optimism, enhanced self-esteem, reduced stress, and greater resilience in the face of adversity. These benefits have been proven by the work of several psychology researchers such as Claude Steele, David Sherman and Geoffrey Cohen.
However, repeating positive affirmations doesn’t always encourage action. The brain convinces itself that the result has already been achieved, it may not feel the need to act. Gabriele Oettingen developed the WOOP method based on the theory of mental contrasting with implementation intention. This method consists of visualizing the ideal situation while considering the present obstacles to overcome, then imagining the most appropriate behaviors when the obstacles arise. This way of proceeding promotes both action and proactive planning, by automating reactions when faced with the identified obstacles.
