À propos de cet audio

“Beware the dusky maidens of Farise!”

After facing war, death, unruly gods, and unmitigated evil, Minalan the Spellmonger is forced to return to Farise, the site of his earliest battles, with the simple assignment to conquer the subtropical city-state and expel the pirates that plague the kingdom’s shipping. Tired of warfare, Minalan embarks on a clandestine campaign to do so, assuming an alias and setting up shop in Farise as a mere Practical Adept as cover for his operation. Recruiting a cadre of talented agents to assist, he reluctantly begins the task of infiltrating and observing Farisian society and its corrupt, ramshackle regime of pirates and rebels with the goal of subverting it.

But it’s not easy. The Farisians are a strange and stubborn people whose customs and history are at odds with Minalan’s feudal sensibilities. The popular sailor’s warning to “beware the dusky maidens of Farise” becomes all too apt as he secretly plots to seize the remote remnant of the Magocracy. The ancient underground organization known as the Contramara seems to be behind every plot and scheme, and unseen masters control the city like puppeteers in the Farisian marketplace. Assassination, kidnapping, extortion, betrayal, and bribery are the rules of the day as different power blocs play the game of whispers with costumed gangs in the streets and daggers in the salons. It doesn’t take a wizard to realize that revolution is in the air and things are at a breaking point.

Minalan must struggle with the ghosts of his past as he tries to navigate an uncertain future in the hot, storm-tossed land he once occupied. Legacies from his days in the occupation army fifteen years before return to haunt him and complicate his mission while he keeps up the pretense of being a simple self-promoting Practical Adept, selling his spellwork like any other artisan. But when one of the infamous “dusky maidens of Farise” stumbles across this mission with an old, one-eyed wizard, things start to get complicated.

In a journey that takes him from ancient ruins to hidden temples to the sewers of Farise to the spire of the Doge’s Citadel, Minalan undertakes an adventure unlike any he’s faced before. New allies and shifting politics propel him to question his past, his motives, and his very identity as he realizes the sinister truth in another old saying: “Nothing is as it seems in Farise.” For there is a new, unknown power working behind the scenes, one even older and more determined than the Contramara, to control the chaotic city and determine its fate. And all that stands in its way is one resolute Practical Adept!

Best MC by Far

There are so many reasons to like the Spelmonger series and one reason is the detail put into creating the best MC out there. A close second might be the fantastic supporting characters. I drop any book half way through to start a new instalment of spelmonger as soon as it’s released.

My goodness this was amazing

Highly highly recommend.
Best book so far, in my opinion, which is saying a lot because the others are so damn good. Truly masterful and an absolute pleasure to listen to. Stayed up till 5am despite my midterm tomorrow to listen to this narrative heroin.

Mirkandar the Magnificent! - Best dad!

Another great addition to the Spellmonger series. This one takes us away from war and death (mostly...) and back into politics, subterfuge, assassination, and kingdom building. It does a great job expanding the wonderful world of Callidore as well as expanding Minalin as a character. Terry did not fall into the trap like Brandon Sanderson did with his take on mental disorder where it detracted from the heroism of the character (Brandon should refer to Tropic Thunder, Simple Jack) - Terry's take added to Minalin. Additionally, the hints about what is to come in the next book regarding the Alon and the political ramifications of Minalin's decisions has made me crave the next one mightily without using a cliff hanger as usual. John Lee gives a banger of a performance as is expected to be honest - that guy deserves some awards. My only complaint is that I wish Terry would focus on the next in this series instead of his side story - how do I become a beta reader!?

Expansion without sprawl

TM has again expanded our world of magic and added characters but has not sprawled the story to an unmanageable scope...although he may not agree. This focus on human nature and frailty is an invigorating side trip away from beasts and blasts. However, with no major characters lost yet the inevitable makes me eager and apprehensive for the next installment. What more could you ask of a story teller. Excellent addition to the series, conjured on the voices of an exceptional vocal performance.

Amazing

This latest installment of the Spellmonger Series is one of the best chapters. It is now my favorite book of the series knocking Magelord Book 3 from that position on my personal list. it was amazingly crafted with a rich history of the People of Farise. The emotions Minalin deals with upon his return to Farise and how he deals with them are a struggle that he makes the readers feel in their core. This book is a must read and I hope you enjoy the adventure as much as I did

Lack of Interesting Storytelling

The last two books have taken this once great and interesting story to a dull and uneventful place. Much less “happens” than prior books. Books 16 and 17 are mostly filler - full of uninteresting information that doesn’t lead to dynamic enough plot events. There is little or very slow plot and character growth. Suggest to the author to revisit his prior, more exciting, books to see what makes Minaland interesting - new enchantments, battle, character drama, etc.
