À propos de cet audio

As the history of a murdered family is pieced together, Detective Frank Yakabuski learns something criminal has been happening at Ragged Lake, with roots going back decades....

The debut in a pause-resisting trilogy from award-winning writer Ron Corbett.

Gruesome murders, a northern secret, and a buried past

While working one afternoon on the Northern Divide, a young tree-marker makes a grisly discovery: in a squatter's cabin near an old mill town, a family has been murdered.

An army vet coming off a successful turn leading a task force that took down infamous biker criminals, Detective Frank Yakabuski arrives in Ragged Lake, a nearly abandoned village, to solve the family's murder. But no one is willing to talk. With a winter storm coming, Yakabuski sequesters the locals in a fishing lodge as he investigates the area with his two junior officers. Before long, he is fighting not only to solve the crime, but also to stay alive and protect the few innocents left living in the desolate woods.

A richly atmospheric mystery with sweeping backdrops, explosive action, and memorable villains, Ragged Lake will keep you guessing - about the violent crime, the nature of family, and secret deeds done long ago on abandoned frontiers.

Unexpected treasure

Wow, what a grand adventure from a gifted writer who paints beauty, heartbreak in simple, unforgettable words. I won’t soon forget this listen about people who’ve lost their way in a world that doesn’t have a place for them anymore. Evil easily takes over this vacuum, as it almost did in Ragged Lake. A really good novel about the Canadian North, and its people. I recommend it highly. Must explore his next novels.

Interesting Mystery. Ho-hum Execution.

Perhaps Ron Corbett's storytelling style just doesn't work for me. To be certain, his vocabulary/prose is capable, his descriptions are realistic, and his plotting is commendable...but the book - told partly through the diary of one of the victims found in an isolated Northwoods cabin - goes much deeper into the demise of a one-industry mostly Cree community (after the local Pulp Mill closes) than it does into the mass murder of the reclusive family - becoming philosophical and somewhat maudlin at times. There are some pulse-pounding action scenes, but I found the author's reflective approach and methodical "this-happened-and-then-that-happened" narrative technique uncaptivating.

As to presentation: Reader Graham Nowatt contributes to my impression with a workmanlike effort. Nowatt is a solid professional, mind you.. better than average in fact. Again, he just failed to blow me away. Recorded Books Inc. did well in casting the project - and provide exemplary technical support - but couldn't overcome the deficiencies in the text.

Altogether, 'Ragged Lake' merits 5.5 stars out of 10. Even for free, I could have done better. Who knows? Corbett's story might grab you more than it did me.. but I suggest you spend your Credit elsewhere when the book leaves the "included with your subscription" menu.
