À propos de cet audio
Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year 2023
Long-listed, New York Magazine Best Books of the Year 2023
One of BookPage's Best Audiobooks of 2023
"Loftus is a charming narrator...goofy, engaging, and always game to do a silly voice."—The New York Times
"There’s something terribly irresistible about her narration, which is often incredibly funny."—BookPage
Part travelogue, part culinary history, all capitalist critique—comedian Jamie Loftus's debut, Raw Dog, will take you on a cross-country road trip in the summer of 2021, and reveal what the creation, culture, and class influence of hot dogs says about America now.
“Wise and funny”—ANDY RICHTER • “Gonzo yet vulnerable”—GABE DUNN • “Hot dog Moby-Dick”—BRANSON REESE • “Revealing, funny, sad, horny, and insatiably curious”—SARAH MARSHALL • “A wild ride”—ROBERT EVANS • “Deeply incisive and hilariously honest”—JACK O’BRIEN
Hot dogs. Poor people created them. Rich people found a way to charge fifteen dollars for them. They’re high culture, they’re low culture, they’re sports food, they’re kids' food, they’re hangover food, and they’re deeply American, despite having no basis whatsoever in America's Indigenous traditions. You can love them, you can hate them, but you can’t avoid the great American hot dog.
Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs is part investigation into the cultural and culinary significance of hot dogs and part travelogue documenting a cross-country road trip researching them as they’re served today. From avocado and spice in the West to ass-shattering chili in the East to an entire salad on a slice of meat in Chicago, Loftus, her pets, and her ex eat their way across the country during the strange summer of 2021. It’s a brief window into the year between waves of a plague that the American government has the resources to temper, but not the interest.
So grab a dog, lay out your picnic blanket, and dig into the delicious and inevitable product of centuries of violence, poverty, and ambition, now rolling around at your local 7-Eleven.
“One of the freshest and most insightful new comedic voices of this decade.”—LINDSAY ELLIS

In 2021 cryptocurrency went mainstream. Giant investment funds were buying it, celebrities like Tom Brady endorsed it, and TV ads hailed it as the future of money. Hardly anyone knew how it worked—but why bother with the particulars when everyone was making a fortune from Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, or some other bizarrely named “digital asset”? As he observed this frenzy, investigative reporter Zeke Faux had a nagging question: Was it all just a confidence game of epic proportions? What started as curiosity—with a dash of FOMO—would morph into a two-year globe-spanning quest.

Maria Bamford is a comedian’s comedian (an outsider among outsiders) and has forever fought to find a place to belong. From struggling with an eating disorder as a child of the 1980s, to navigating a career in the arts (and medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization), she has tried just about every method possible to not only be a part of the world, but to want to be a part of it. In Bamford’s “trademark blend of disarming intimacy and dark whimsy” (Publishers Weekly), Sure, I’ll Join Your Cult brings us on a quest to participate in something.

Dimos Horacki is a Borolian journalist and a cynical patriot, his muckraking days behind him. But when his newspaper ships him to the front, he’s embedded in the Imperial Army and the reality of colonial expansion is laid bare before him. His adventures take him from villages and homesteads to the great refugee city of Hronople, built of glass, steel, and stone, all while a war rages around him. The empire fights for coal and iron, but the anarchists of Hron fight for their way of life.

Ce que les critiques en disent
"Raw Dog will leave you nourished."—BuzzFeed
“Jamie Loftus is a wise and funny storyteller, and her enthusiasm is inspiring. There’s so much about hot dogs that you need to know, and Jamie is here to teach you!”—ANDY RICHTER, actor and writer
“A moving, gorgeously written and lovingly researched dive into the world of hot dogs, American nationalism, in-group scandal, and delicate human relationships. This gonzo yet vulnerable trek is meaty, fun, critical, and evocative all at once. Jamie Loftus is the hot dog generation's Joan Didion.”—GABE DUNN, New York Times bestselling coauthor of I Hate Everyone But You

Funny and critical
Jamie selects her best cuts on hot dog history, culture, and road tripping in America to cook up into a juicy book that has a bit of a snap. Hop into the weinermobile with Jamie if you really want a peek at how the All American sausage is made. The audiobook is even better because it's narrated by the author.
Beware: Too raw and funny to listen to with your kids unless they are very cool teens.

I’ve been recommending this to everyone
This audiobook was absolutely delightful. Jamie’s the master of *doing something* without being pretentious about it. She’s our down-to-earth academic comedian queen! I laughed and cried too many times to count. Side note: I’ve been vegan for like 8 years and I was never a huge fan of hot dogs before then, but it doesn’t even matter lol

Excellent
Delightfully unhinged and weirdly introspective. Definitely worth the credit.
Also, I'm glad she read her own work herself, in her own voice. I don't think it would have been the same if some rando narrator told this tale.

This is what I needed!!!!!
I needed this. Loftus is as excellent a reader as she is a writer - RARE and valuable as a dyslexic listener. Raw Dog this was cathartic, a joy and delight.
Also.. I happen to live in Thuringia and was shook but not surprised to hear mention for the iconic local wurst.

High Expectations Were Surpassed
I am so glad I got the audio version because hearing Jamie read the book herself is a treat, particularly when she’s telling a dirty joke or making an honest emotional admission.
The history (far and recent) was well-researched and delivered with plenty of blame for those exploiting the animals and workers. Her personal story was incredibly entertaining and I am relieved that she began her reading with the insistence that she was fine because I was really concerned for her health and safety after her description of the trip.
It’s not a long book and I finished it over the course of two days; now that I’ve finished, I plan to listen to it with my partner so he can enjoy it with me.

I knew I would love it
Do I now want to travel the US and try all these hotdogs? No, not really. Am I grateful that Jamie did and lived to tell me about it? Definitely. I’ve been a fan of her humour since hearing her on The Daily Zeitgeist when that podcast first aired. This book is more than hotdogs. It’s a great commentary on American history as well as current socioeconomic issues. Damn funny too.

Leaves me craving hot dogs
Jamie Loftus knows how to write about hot dogs, both the good and nasty parts about them. The delicious sounding accounts of the sometimes bizarre regional American takes on the hot dog make you want to get on the road and eat some weird meat, while also making you maybe wonder how one person could eat so many hot dogs.
It’s a freeze frame of American life in the midst of ever turbulent times that while it was released last year and written two years before seems like another age ago, reminding you of how fast life changes and how things never really change, including the hot dog.
I also learned that I could cook hot dogs on the stove fried in oil and butter, split open. Serious game changer, thank you Jamie.
