When two grotesquely deformed skeletons are found deep in the mud off the Manhattan shoreline, museum curator Margo Green is called in to aid the investigation. Margo must once again team up with police lieutenant D'Agosta and FBI agent Pendergast, as well as the brilliant Dr. Frock, to try and solve the puzzle. The trail soon leads deep underground, where they will face the awakening of a slumbering nightmare.

Loved this!
Goes well with Relic and much detailed mention is given of events in that story. Good characterization, narrator was enjoyable. Story, of course, was great!

Weird fiction with great female leads
Really enjoyed the second installment of the Pendergast Series, although it feels like a misnomer as the central protagonist is for me Dr. Margo Green. The female characters in this book drive the story, and the sexism they encounter is realistic. I grew up in the seventies and I can relate. Class inequality and disability are also touchstones in this book. It would be a great read for a high school or college English class - it illustrates how misinformation, slant, assumptions and bias can put good people against one another in a violent riot. Considering this is a book of weird fiction from the late nineties, it definitely appeals to a modern audience. I was also surprised to dicover the underground Manhattan described is real! If you are waffling; invest the credit already!!
